If you have been driving in a lot of dusty, dirty road areas, you my need to clean your radiator from the back to the front. You'll be surprised at how much junk comes out of there.

My truck did that in March, it didn't go to 245 but it did run hotter than I had ever seen it. Since then it has run warmer than usual but not that hot since. But I have not driven as far in as warm of tempretures since.

First thing I would do before even pulling it into the shop would be to crawl underneath and see if the fan clutch wiring is in tact. Next would be the DRB test to see if there were any codes and check the freeze frame data. After that, road test and observe the engine temps. If you need some Vegas suggestions give me a pm....

I have seen higher temps (198*-210*) pulling my 5ver or 27' goose neck also. I had one experience last summer coming out of southern utah where I hit 245* empty . It was hotter than heck, ambient 118*, intake temp 132*. I had set the cruise on 65 mph and got talkin to the wife and wasn't paying attention as we climbed toward Cedar City but once I caught it I let out of it the temps slowly came down. Still seemed a little odd being empty for temps to get that high. I have wondered about seeing if there was a cooler thermostat I could run, or is there a better coolant that would help ? My engine temp will go up 8-10* just on an aggresive freeway pass, maybe it's normal.

"Check the freeze frame data", can you explain please?

Freeze frame data....when a dtc is set the ecm stores the info that the sensors read at the time of the dtc, engine rpm, load, apps, rail psi, rail setpoint, fan duty cycle among other things.

that is about the upper temp limit where i would feel comfortable operating my engine. below that is all good by my view [although the engine lube oil temp would be probably 10* hotter and that is getting hot..]

The fan clutch may be your problem. I had mine replaced last year and have heard of many who also had theirs replaced also.

I checked into a new thermostat for the truck today 40 bucks +tax, maybe me but that sounds like highway robbery. Does anyone have a better source than dealer, tried parts plus but they said they didn't list anything yet?
