OverDrive problems...

I have had problems in the past with the plug that goes into the Tranny for the speedometer/overdrive (it's in bad shape). Usually when it goes out I get NO overdrive OR speedometer. This time I am getting readout on the speedo, but overdrive is hesitant to kick in. It also switches back and forth when I'm at the speed it usually kicks in. I have no tranny leaks and no shifting problems otherwise.

Does it still sound like a wiring prob? Maybe at the switch? Switch end seems to be ok.

Where can I get a replacement plug? Got a part number?

Thanks

That plug is attached to the speed sensor. You'll need to replace that sensor and your speedo problems should go away.
But first, do the easy stuff... pull ALL the plugs, spray well with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease and reconnect them.
Do a test drive or 6 and see how you make out.
At this point it sounds more like an electrical issue but I'd not rule out the speed sensor..

The fact your speedo is working indicates that the signal from the speed sensor is allright the TPS (throtle position sensor) mounted on the injector pump. It has a plugin with 3 wires comming out of it the vibration of the engine creats a intermitent conection in a lot of cases. The PCM (powertrain control module) is using the signal from the TPS & the speed sensor to determine when to or weather to go into or to OD or to down shift 4-3. I found that the best remedy is to cut the plugin off of the wire harness an take about 3" of 14 or 16 gauge fine braded copper wire (absorbs the vibration) and soilder the joints together directly to the TPS. This will fix the problem. You can go to Dodge dealer and buy the plugin. I purchased a speed sensor and it came with a new plugin.
If you have any fluid leaking from the speed sensor it should be replaced. Good luck.

all i can tell you is that my TPS/speed sensor/tranny temp sensor/no OD problems have been an ongoing nightmare.

i hope you meet with more success than i've so far had.

PS - Bill K is going to have another go at it this week. that ought to be the end of it.
