outer tierod ball stud fracture

Got in truck to leave for Thanksgiving and turned the wheel about 3/4 backing out of driveway and SNAP grind. Thought I ran over something got out quick look under truck nothing there but looked closer and my ball stud was fractured and steering linkage hanging down. I have the steering upgrade to the ae series steering parts. From what I understand this is the steering that was recalled for the 2008-2011 trucks but of course Chrysler has been evasive and states that my v.i.n. is not part of the recall. Giving up on that for now. I just want to fix it. Has anyone found a source or way to get the outer tierod without buying the complete package and be able to be sure the tierod is matched to the ae components. Please help with part numbers if available. I need to get this thing back on the road. Thanks, Scott

I have the upgraded steering too and this summer I got a letter from Dodge to bring it in and have it inspected. They inspected it and said I was AOK. Then I showed them the recall notice and argued with them. They replaced the inner drag link for free. When you do replace it make sure you vertically align as mentioned in the H46 recall notice.

You can buy just the parts you want from here.

Thanks 03, I think this situation pertains more to the L-16 recall issued in July 2011. I'm still fighting with Chrysler to have them verify that my vehicle is not covered by this recall. If you read the summary for L-16 it describes my problem exactly, yet they won't authorize recall work as my v.i.n. is not identified specifically. The upgraded steering was installed on my truck in Dec of 2009. I appreciate the link for parts and thanks. Now I just need to make sure I can get the parts that mate up with the AE version of the steering linkage.////The main problem seems to be that Chrysler does not have a reliable way to identify those of us who got the upgraded (recalled AE steering) added to our 2003-2008 trucks.

I'm still waiting on the L16 letter. It's been long enough I'll probably go raise a little dust.

As for verification that you are one who got the AE parts and should be on the recall list, did you have a dealer do the install or did you do it yourself? If it was a dealer, they should have that under the truck's VIN vehicle history. If you installed it, supply copies of receipts with part numbers.

grapplerusa,
I don't know anything about the L-16 recall (can you send me that) You hit the nail on the head Chrysler has no way of knowing which parts are defective because they didn't properly mark the parts. That's what I argued about when they told me my truck was AOK. I asked them how can you tell me that when it says right in the recall that if the part has no label then you must replace. Mine didn't have a label so I forced them to replace it. They even had the mechanic come out and talk to me in the customer waiting area. I told the guy I was no idiot. He wanted to debate the issue in front of several other waiting customers. I finally got thru to him that it was a liability issue and either way he gets paid for the day...so I stood up, got in his face and told him "F-ing replace it". After the mechanic walked away I got a thumbs up from the other customers who listened to the entire drama unfold. What a bunch of BS if you ask me.

Hey guys, Thanks for the input I am running into a brick wall here with Chrysler. So I will have to start writing letters to corporate. I will continue to pursue and let you know. I know there are others who have had this failure, please file a report with NTHSA this is the only way we will get this issue with the older trucks with newer steering clarified and addressed. I will post their number and info shortly. As far as L-16, just do a search on google for "dodge ram 2500 recalls " and you will be able to pull it up for any year from 2003-20011 trucks. There is information on L-16 in various threads on this site as well. The recall was issued in July 2011. Chrysler is all over the place on this, I can't get straight answers from anyone you wouldn't believe some of the answers I've got from dealers and how much they vary and some of the things I've been told by customer care. I will keep you posted.

outer tierod end ball stud fracture

Update: After going round and round with Chrysler about recall and then round and round with dealers over parts, I found a solution. Dealers did not want to sell me just the tierod end. They offered tierod kits at a cost of $350-$700. Looked at online sources for Mopar parts and was able to purchase just the tierod end at a cost of $75-$110 plus shipping. Remember this is for a steering system that is at least partially under recall. Sooo after exhaustive online searches I found that MOOG is the answer. They manufacture a tierod end for the 2009 trucks that appears to be a direct replacement for the the ae steering part that I needed. Part #ES800532 Cost $48.94 and no shipping as it was available locally. Part seems to be quite stout and I was able to install in under an hour with no issues. Had it aligned and it is performing flawlessly. Hope this helps anyone with similar issues. If you have any questions let me know. Thanks again to all of you who make this a great site. Scott
