Out of state truck to CA - emissions

I'm looking for a used 3rd gen, the HO 600 motor, and am curious if anyone has recently bought an out of state truck and what they had to go through to get it registered in CA with our new smog checks for diesels. Is there any differences in these motors or emissions equip between states, especially in the 600 motors? I heard that trucks with higher mileage used to be harder to bring in when concerning like a 96 12v, but I know they had an EGR setup in CA that wasn't present on others - not sure if mileage matters much. Just curious, appreciate the help or stories if you guys have any. Thanks

The smog checks are currently only visual. I would think as long as you have a cat and muffler, you should be good to go. Of course, having everything looking as close to stock as possible would make passing even easier. After all, you can always remove them after the check.

My 04.5 600 was a "50 state legal engine" when I purchased it new. I moved from CO to CA and didn't need to do anything but that was over 4 yrs ago. I do recall that they had some funny rule that you could not import a non CA Dealer sold diesel unless it has over 7,500 miles on it. Was not a factor for me.

I'm no longer living in CA so not sure what CA looks for with Diesels coming in state now. However, since it was 50 state legal engine at time of mfg and has a CAT I would think it would meet CA's requirements unless its been modified. I'm sure a call to DMV would clear it up, they might even have an online PDF covering Diesels.

I brought an '03 HO (49 State Legal) into CA (the other state) and XZILR8N is right, had to have 7,500 miles and I think at least 6 months old too. This is to keep folks like me from just jumping over the boarder to make the purchase and bring it back. As far as DMV, they came out and took a look at the VIN only. Now that it has to pass smog every other year, it has to look stock and not smoke a lot when he punches it.

Now, for the straight skinny, go to this DMV page for info on purchasing an out of state vehicle these days.

If you are into reading more and want to know what is behind smog checks, read from the Bureau of Automotive Repairs on the smog check program.
Back to morning brew. . .

Awesome that's what I had been finding too. So essentially it'd work just like buying any other vehicle with the pink and they'll send me new plates? Thank you guys, appreciate it.
