out of fuel help!

i lent my sister my truck( 07/5.9 ) to haul her trailer home from the lake. she got it home but on the way to my house she ran it out of fuel! i changed the fuel filter and filled it with diesel, and put 5 gal in the tank. can i just try to start it? if i just turn the key on with out starting, will it circulate fuel to the coman rail and purge all air? then just fire it up? i realy dont want to cook my cp3 help help help!!!

Bump the starter but don't try to start it. You should hear the lift pump run for a time. When it stops, turn the key off and do it two more times. That will usually do it.

bumping the key is the right way to do it, but i always take the fuel filter loose but not all the way that way it can push the air out right there. Then bump the key and let it fill it until it pushes fuel out the top of the filter. Works best if you have two people so one can tighten down the filter as soon as it starts to leak, and the other can shut the key off. I wouldnt worry about cooking the cp3 because nothing will happen until it has enough rail pressure to run you would have to turn it over a long time to smoke it without fuel in it.

The above is what I would do.

DO NOT CRACK THE INJECTOR LINES! This was an trick used on older trucks, very dangerous on the newer common rails.

Get your sister back...

Wow, you guys were quick to answer that question!!

I should carry a computer with me at all times, or just use my phone to post on here if I break down. Way to go!!!

My wife ran my truck out once, and I just added fuel and treated it like a filter change. Bump the starter a few times and let it fill up. It started and ran okay.
