Check out this page. Its an article by Ted Janetty which describes the best mods and what order to do them. Im sure we can all debate whether or not it is actually the best method but if you are looking for a good start point this is probably it.

1)fix kdp (killer dow pin)
2)exhaust
3)air intake
4)gauges
(dont need the gauges until you add fuel enhancements)
5)get timing advanced (most set it to 16.5*)
6)#10 fuel plate
7)370 injectors and delivery valves
8)3 gsk govenor
9)t/c and v/b
buy them in that order
