Opinions needed 5.9 or 6.7

Hi, ( posted this on the 6.7 board as well as here)

I'm new to this board this is my first post here as well as being uncertain about the latest info on the 5.9 vs the 6.7 pros and cons.

My situation is this. My 93 5.9 with about 400k miles on it just had a serious electrical system melt down, fried and melted wires under the dash all over the place, oil leaks worn out front end, brake problems and the list goes on ( the 5.9 is still running strong tho). So now I'm faced with getting a new one.

I've located both 5.9's and 6.7's in my general area at about the same cost give or take a bit, actually the 5.9's are slightly less but not by much. I'm really having a hard time deciding on which route to go.

What I'm looking at is a 2500 4x4 slt package with the auto transmission for both choices. My typical usage entails approx. 80% highway driving and the balance around town stuff for work related issues, running around town for groceries etc.etc. and usually 6-7 trips a year during the winter up to Canada dragging a 4 place snowmobile box trailer 600 to 700 miles each way when the temps usually hover around -30 to -40 degrees. The trailer grosses out about 7000 lbs.

Guess what I'm looking for here are opinions as to how everyone feels either choice would be to handle my intended usage of about 35,000 miles a year driving, expected fuel mpg for both choices, and overall reliability issues between both choices.

Thanks in advance for your opinions,

Tom

In my opinion, I say go with the 5.9. I just had my 06 replaced by an 07 5.9. I test drove both, etc.. After reading these boards, I think the 6.7 needs another year to get the kinks out. I never have to worry about where I fuel, etc. PLUS, I can service the 5.9 myself. If I switched to 6.7 I would need to learn some of it all over again!! I have 1,000 miles on the truck in less than a week and am seeing 22.5 Empty MPG and 17 towing.... All HAND calculated....

I was kinda in the same situation when I bought my '06... the '07 was on the lot with the new 6.7l... Prices were the same on both trucks.... but I had owned an old 89 model that I HEAVILY abused for years...and just could NOT kill.. In fact the truck is STILL running today.
So, that was my decision to buy the 06 with the 5.9L... I hear the 6.7 is doing ok... but I have more faith in the 5.9

After doing alot of reading on the 6.7 engines. Its not really the engine its self that is a problem, but the emmission crap around it. I think the 6.7 is just as good as 5.9 except the smog/emmission stuff on the 07.5 trucks. The mileage would be just as good and more get up and go tq if the 6.7 was in a pre 07.5 truck w/o the smog/emmission crap. That's were Dodge has to tweak out the problems. I'm I wrong on this?

Remember GM & Ford will be going through similiar pains when they have to be 2010 compliance. Dodge is the only one to meet 2010.

Until they figure the small bugs out on 07.5's. Get a 5.9 or wait another year for an 08 truck.
