Thumbs up One piece drive shaft

Okay, here is the history and the results.

Had a 68 mph vibration from day of delivery on the truck, 3 miles on the odometer. Multiple trips to dealer for various issues but always had them check for the vibration. The dealer always said could not duplicate. I finally take the tech for a ride and duplicate the vibration, he acknowledges it and decides to put leaf springs in the truck, no change. Truck runs past warranty I keep driving it till the vibration gets worse and I can not handle it any more. Pull the drive shaft change all the u-joints and have both sections balanced. Drive shaft shop said all was good, spun true and needed nothing. Reinstall and road test, vibration still there. I figured maybe I reversed a yoke inadvertently during reassembly from the u-joint install, so I swap them around. The vibration was slightly less but still there. I pull the front shaft have that checked and drive the truck without the front shaft, no difference. I even set the truck on jack stands and had one of our drivers run it up to 68 mph while I was under the truck looking for anything obvious, nothing, all looked good. I used my stethoscope to listen to the rear axle, it was surprisingly quite, I did have some noise from the transfer case and originally thought that may be an issue but ruled that out later.

I read up on the one piece shaft here on DTR and find mostly positive results but a few that did not resolve the issue so I was hesitant to throw $625 at the truck without being sure. I pull the trigger and order the one piece shaft from Doghouse Diesel performance on Wednesday afternoon. They ship it out the next day, I get it today and install it. The install took me about 1/2 hour total and that was lying on my back using air tools.

Here is the part you all been waiting for.

Road test the truck, I take the routes I travel daily so I can duplicate the vibration in known conditions. Absolutely NO vibrations at all, truck is smooth as silk at any speed. My truck has never, never, ever, been this smooth, with that being said I wish I had done this way sooner. Be advised that I do not believe this shaft will cure a launch shudder, only road speed vibration concerns.

I high recommend installing this if you have the symptoms described, It is truly worth the expense.

Glad it fixed your problems. It's a great feeling not to feel that annoying vibration. I did the same fix on my 2003 and it fixed my launch shudder. It feels like a new truck. Been almost a year and no problems at all. Wish Dodge would have designed it right to begin with.

Another happy person to add to the 1-piece ds list. I have had mine for quite a while, have been happy for many miles now. Shudder gone, vibrations gone, like a new truck after the install. Dodge really dropped the ball with the 2-piece, should have been 1-piece all along.

Don't waste time shimming the carrier bracket. I've had my 1 piece for over a year and 14k miles with 0 issues. Truck is smooth as silk with no launch shudder or any vibes!! Well worth the $550 I spent !!!!

Just another update,

I put about 1000 miles on the new shaft with multiple highway trips. I have a very slight vibration at 75 mph, took the front drive shaft out then made the same trips I have been making and the vibration is gone. The vibration is so minuet that it really does not warrant repair, plus I seldom drive at 75 due to the 410 gearing, fuel economy plummets. All in all very satisfied with the one piece. I will make another report once I have a chance to pull my 5ver.

Folks.

My take on the driveline vibration has nothing to do with phasing, or overall shaft balance on the two piece shafts. Mine has to do with the cheap rubber they use in the hanger bearing. I have NEVER seen so many hanger bearings go south, as I have with the 3rd generation dodges. Even the 2nd gens were far superior.

That said, I do firmly believe in a 1 piece, propely balanced shaft, and its good to see that you guys are having success with it.

Do they make a one piece shaft for a 2003 4 door, longbed, 4x4, 6 speed?

If so, part number please?

In short they do not make a direct bolt in for the 2003 or 2004 with the nv 5600 6 speed.To make it work purchase a 52123162aa and have it shortened by about 2.5 inches to work. Had the local driveline service shorten and rebalance mine and it works great. Can measure mine if you want exact lenght.

Read Post#9 above...there is NO drop-in, one-piece aluminum DS for a truck equipped with a NV5600.

G56 yes, NV5600 no.

You will need to have an aluminum DS shortened or custom built for that truck, no matter what anyone else claims.

If still interested, Doghouse Diesel is suppling custom aluminum DS for ANY truck, there are instructions how to measure for it on their website. Just google doghousediesel.

For a stock truck $800+ from doghouse is hard to swallow.


If 52105655AD is the correct part number then $334.80 + 32 shipping and $70 to shorten and balance.

My question above was not posted based on ignorance of the issue considering the numerous posts around the internet and numerous conflicting "it does fit" and then the "it doesnt fit" adament claims out there now like yours

With time short since i swallowed another carrier bearing on monday Dodge parts.com was $597 + shipping to get a new driveline, then id have to get it shortened 2" and id have to wait all week to get it

so instead i called AL at driveline services of Sacramento and he was able to build me a .120 wall 5" tube'd 1485 jointed driveline for a better price than buying one from dodge

paid $630 with tax picked up from him


Dodge prices are up now that warranty period is up

78" from center face of t-case splines to center of face of differential flange



Definately best upgrade ive done in awhile. smoother starts less drivetrin noise. cant speak to any faster accelleration but noticibly smoother when you let the clutch out. no more rubber band feel.

Great to hear! If (when) I need to I will probably have a local driveline shop build me one too.
