In cold weather (-10C) my cummins makes an odd sound when starting. Its a loud higher pitched sound when I have it revved over 1000rpm unless its just idled for about 1.5 or so minutes around 600-700 rpm. I am also getting "white smoke", it doesn't smell rich, or any different from regular diesel exhaust, steam maybe.

My question, is this sound due to the fact that I am running 15w-40 without using the heater plug (I do not have an outside plug, so using the block heater is rare, I only drive in weather below -5C if I have to) or if I might need to replace the fuel lines.

As far as start up is concerned, it starts just fine, If its cold or really humid outside (say maybe 5C and easily able to see breath) then I can still see some exhaust.

Any thoughts?

Allright, figured it out this morning as probably a fuel line since I had some diesel leaking out from somewhere around the fuel filter.

mine did that until I replace the ruber lines and fuel strainer. If it still does it after you replace the rubber lines, you might replace the overflow valve
