oil pressure question
Does oil pressure vary or is it contstant. Does it fluctuate with the oil pressure guage. I read somewhere on an old post that it's constant, and that the needle moves just because computer tells it to. If it moves (just because), what's the point of that?

I seriously doubt the oil pressure guage is controlled by the computer. It may be a slow responding guage but it most likely is connected to the Oil Pressure sending unit on the engine. Oil pressure vill vary with temperature and engine RPM.
Hope this helps.

The oil preasure gauge is a dumy gauge. The computer sees oil presure frome the sensor as pass/fail and that is it. It uses variables frome other sensors such as engine temp and RPM to make up a presure that the driver would expect to see. So the gauge is as worthless as an idiot light, literaly. Basicly if the gauge ever drops to 0, it is to late and damage is probobly already done. This has been discused in great length here before but I dont remember if there was a way to put an aftermarket real presure gauge on or not. But the factory gauge is nothing more than a fancy idiot light.

bkrukow,
That's what I thought I'd read somewhere. How much does a guage cost on an average. If my memory serves me they are in the hundreds. I expect I'll have to have them installed too. I'm not much of an electrician...at all.

I had read that also, but not sure I belive it... My oil pressure never moved from idle to wot, until I changed to synth oil, now it responds very quickly to rpm differences. I have a hard time believing that would make that kind of difference on an "idoit light" guage. I had heard that there are 2 sensors, 1 for the gauge, and 1 for the computer to utilize as "safe" or "unsafe"?? Not sure which (if any) are accurate, but it does seem strange the pressure would only change with synth oil, not sure what else the computer could look at to reference that change?
