Oil pan and main seals change

Oil pan and main seals change
Had a leak start up in the last couple days. 05 2500 (with the auto tranny) with 200 kilometers on it. just bought it about 10000 ago so i dont know much on the history. Its leaking down the front of my adaptor plate from what looks like the oil pan gasket. If the rear main seal was leaking it would be exiting out the half circle inspection plate correct? Not up at the adaptor plate and oil pan. Do any of you know if the pan gasket is at fault or if its my main seal?

Mine did what you are describing. It leaked from the oil pan gasket. Mine was replaced under warranty. I watched the procedure and it involved jacking then engine up moving the oil pan bolts, then removing the oil pick up tube inside the pan then removing the pan and reversing the procedure to install.

oh boy oh boy. Well i got the time to pull my inspection cover off today and it looks like its leaking a good amount of oil in with my torque to so i think im pointing the finger at my rear main. Has anyone on here done one? Im guessing you need a special installer for the new one just like the big cat motors but i may be wrong. Can anybody here offer a couple words of advice?

The procedure for that is pretty easy once you get the trans and torque converter out of the way. The rear main seal itself cost me about $10 at the local Cummins dealer. You drill and tap a couple holes in the old seal and use a slide hammer to remove the old seal, then tap the new seal into place.

ten bucks, man you should be my new source for parts. I went to cummins today and they wanted 115 canadian. Because Im a mechanic they put it down to 85 bucks. which is still a good price.
anyway it appears they sell you a disposable installer with the seal. which is **** sweet. Used to cat were you have to have a special tool. Ill put a post up and let you guys know how it went and if it stopped my leak.

Mine was just the pan, and they told me is was a known issue with the gasket. Basically that's "Dealer-Speak" meaning they had no clue. I figured there might have been a run of bad gaskets and I was unlucky enough to get one.

pulled tranny off today, seal was toast. Gunna put it back together tommorrow. My manual doesnt say how much oil i need to refill it and the dealers are all closed up. Anybody here remember at least roughly how much oil it will take in the transmission. (auto)

thanks, I've got a subscription on alldata and they said that after you drain the tranny and torque you only need 6 quarts. I was a bit skeptical about that.
Got the seal changed out tho, man do i love how easy these trucks are to work on. You can really see the heavy duty experience cummins engineers have. Everything is so nice and accesible.

So this thread is about a year old, but I am having the same problem, oil seeping out the back. oil seeping around the oil pan. oil seeping from the front. I need to fix it. I can't even get in to any of the shops around here till after the new year. Do I have to drop the transmission or what is the procedure? If I decide to have a shop do this how much should I expect to pay for it to be done? That being said any diesel techs in the green bay area?
