Oil Leaking

Hey guys, another question. I was wondering if Cummins leaked oil badly because someone told me that they are notorious for leaking oil and that the gaskets go bad all the time. Just wondering if this is true. Thanks

Re:Oil Leaking

I have no leaks...but the oil blowby tube does drip a bit. As you stand in front of the truck, it is located on the right hand side of the motor, in the front, sort of looks like a footlong chunk of heater hose, hanging towards the ground.

Must be thinking of the 2 cycle Detroit diesels. They were just like Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, if they weren't leaking oil, they weren't running right.

Mine doesn't leak, even after switching to synthetic motor oil.
5 years old and 80K miles.

Re:Oil Leaking

My 90 appeared soaked when I baught it last year. Had the valve lash done and new valve cover gaskets, took it to the car wash and stayed pretty much dry except steering and blow by tube.

Re:Oil Leaking

hey Redleg when u say steering u mean as in power steering pump? if so mine leaks sometimes? sometimes it pukes all of it out it has done this a few times but its only like once a month or so. it hasnt done that for awhile now but the whole underneith of my truck is covered in that stuff! i put some of that stop leak power steering fluid in and it hasnt for about 3 weeks now. is there any other places in the front of the engine that leaks that we might need to b aware of?

Re:Oil Leaking

I really don't have to add any power steering fluid, but do check now and then as it is wet and I want to monitor it. I had other problems to contend with before I really worried about this area. I have been waiting for the weather to break and will power wash everything and inspect seriously. I don't think my steering gear is all that wet. Mostly lines and around the back of the timing case. I do get a little smoke out the dip stick and wetness around the top of the tube mostly at start up. I need to monitor this closer. I know on gassers this is not a good sign. I have some time off this week and will look further. I'll try to let you know what I find. I think the reservoir presses on like a gasser, oh yeah 185,000 hard miles.
