Just wondering if anybody in here has dealt with a oil leak Coming from the Power Steering Pump area. It is motor oil and not power steering fluid. Looks to be coming from the yoke/linkage between the motor and the powersteering pump. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I would like to help you out but the best I can do is guess... You need to fill out you sig so we know what year your truck is...

I would that a stab at the vacuum pump seal that is right behind the power steering pump. Some of the other guys around here have changed those seals and can guide you better...

Sounds like the vacuum pump front seal - they are lubricated by oil from motor. Search the site for "vacuum pump seal" - there is alot of info, seal p/n, sizes, and sources.

Yeah, sounds like the dreaded vacuum pump seal leak. If you look around you can find the seal size, and there are some venders that sell kits that include everything that you need except fluid. It is supposed to be a lengthy fix, I have read that it take 5 hrs. This why I haven't gotten around to fixing mine yet.

All you need is the Cummins seal kit # 4089742....about $7.00....takes about 1.5 hours to complete....directions are included in the Cummins seal kit.

I thought that I read that it takes alot longer then that to do. Don't you have to take the power steering pump and the vacuum pump off together to install the seal correctly? Well, I maybe it is just easier to make sure the seal is installed properly. All it takes is a couple of hours? Is this for the average person, or for a mechanic that has done a few of these before?

This is the first pump I have rebuilt, so I left the power steering pump in the truck...it would have been quicker to take both out as a unit. This is not a complicated job...I would rate it a 4 on a scale of 10 for difficulty.

I figured that it wouldn't be that hard, just time consuming because of everything that you had to do. Maybe I will try to get to mine soon, I have been putting it off because I thought it would take longer.

sent the check off for the kit today, should be here by this weekend hopefully and will get to it next week, Are there any special tools needed?

Nothing special...just hand tools...you will need a couple of large sockets to drive out the metal sleeve that holds the seal and then drive it back in place.

well i got her done this morning. started last night with the dismantle and my girl came over so i got side tracked and had to finish it this morning. Not to hard at all. Just a pain in the ****. I thought i was gonna bust a nut getting one of my bolts out of the vacuum pump to gear casing out took all i had to get it.

I had read somewhere that on 2001's you couldnt separate the VP from the PSP and have to do it as a unit and that is balony. I did it to mine. Not hard but probly easier if you wanted to cut the PSP lines as they were not coming off at all. Pretty easy fix. hardest part is getting to some of the bolts from below. I took out my driver side battery and disconnected the intercooler tube.

I bought a kit from a guy that had the seal and all the o-rings to replace as well as good instructions. Its basically a rebuild kit if anybody wants the info on it just PM me.

Best part is looking underneath and not seeing the friggin oil all over the place after i hosed her down with some ZEP Big Orange

I'm looking down that road soon... My seal is starting to weep a bit... I started noticing a bit of oil consumtion and spots on the rear axle...

But I'm still covered by warranty... Just means another trip to the dealer again...

Hope your not talking about your vacuum pump being under warranty. I have read a lot of reports of people not getting waranty work on their vacuum leaks. I have only heard of one person getting it covered. If you go to ask them just ask if its under waranty first dont let them look it over. Some times they will stick you with a inspection fee just for looking at it. Just a thought.
