Oil Leak???

My brother's 98 12 valver is leaking some where around the upper front of the engine. We found oil on the cross link, but I can't tell exactly where it is coming from. Cummins dealer quoted $800 to $2500 over the phone. :'( Any ideas? Thanks

Re:Oil Leak???

Let's hope that it is not the KDP!

Re:Oil Leak???

Try taking it to a car wash and clean the engine off. If it is much of a leak you should be able to see it when you get home. Pay particular attention to the area around the fan pulley. If it is there you are looking at a fairly expensive repair. Also check the valve covers. Mine were leaking and I replaced them. That was fairly easy. Like Smokey said, I hope it isn't the KDP.

Re:Oil Leak???

I've done a search on the KDP, but did not find any pictures. Did I miss something? How difficult is it to repair the KDP problem? Do I have to remove the gear case cover? Thanks

Re:Oil Leak???

I wonder if it the seals between the power steering and vacuum pump?? Cheap fix but gotta pull the pumps.

Yes, say your prayers that it's not the dowel pin. But look at the bright side, you should check it out anyways so probably not a bad idea to dig in and tab it.

On that same note, I would really spend some time trying to find the source of the leak first. Like mentioned earlier, degrease the heck out of the engine and they crawl under there and play detective.

If you need to, I have some pics I can e-mail you. PM me if needed. I found the pics on google by using the search term "Killer Dowel Pin". Good luck, Kevin

Re:Oil Leak???

It could be the front crank seal.
If so pull the cover and while your there tab the KDP.
It's very easy and only costs about 15 cents once your there.
