How often should I drive my truck to keep everything lubed and working well?

Just bought a commuter car and the truck will just be sitting there for 6-10 days at a time. Is this going to hurt anything?

70-100 miles a week, on the average, is this going to be okay?

You should be fine. My truck isn't my daily driver either but I would usually put about 100+ on mine a week on weekends. I've never had any problems with it, just make sure that you get the truck good and warm when you do drive it.

Since October I have actually only drove my truck one time, just to get it out and warm it up. I did that a couple weeks ago and it started and ran just fine. I wasn't able to drive it for so long because I was in a head on collision on Oct 28 in my S-10 and ended up with a broke femur and crushed kneecap that put me out of commission. I probably won't be able to drive it again for another month or two because the clutch is pretty rough on my leg but I'm not worried about hurting the truck because I didn't run it.

I had started it a couple times before but only ran it for a few minutes while I sat in it. I think it was more to help me than to help the truck.

Also look at those trucks on the dealership lots. Some of them sit there for quite a while with no problems, so a good running every 10 days should be just fine.

I've thought about buying a s10 for a commuter, but in a wreck I would rather be the punisher than the punishee..... It's worth the extra 20 bucks a week in my opinion, to know that I'm bigger than most cars I would hit.

I was going to suggest every 2 weeks (14 days) but as was stated regardless of time make sure you get it good and warm.

Thumbs up

My truck was parked on the dealers lot for a year.
Now it`s parked next to my house. I very rarely drive it.
You should not have any problems. Mine is only used when needed and I drive my 2008 Accord for daily use.

I liked my S-10, I'd had it since high school. I got pretty good mileage out of it but truthfully you can get just about the same mileage with a full size 2WD V6 truck. Just try to make sure you are being hit instead of you hitting someone. The guy that hit me passed out and caused this whole mess. Considering how fast he was going when he hit me and how fast we were going I thought the outcome was pretty good! The troopers and EMT's thought we came out pretty good too.

My 06 has sat for 3 weeks several times without being started and I have had no issues with it. I drive a 97 Civic as my daily driver and try to keep the miles to a minimum on my truck. When I do drive it it feels like a new truck everytime I start her up. I try to get a new truck every two yrs but I like this one so much that I am going to keep it for a while especially with all of this emission garbage.

Just keep some biocide in the tank if you're not burning up the fuel every few months and change the oil/lube once a year.... Maybe keep a maintenance charger on it if it's out in the weather. Don't park it in a place where mice and rats live they like to make nests out of wires .

The only thing I can think of is you might want to hook up a "battery tender", a very low amp battery charger to maintain the charge in the batteries. Other than that, just let it warm up before mashing on it too hard when you do drive it.

It kind of sucks that the new truck has to sit because of fuel prices, and I'm in that boat too. I got an $1800 four door four banger that gets 25 mpg in mixed driving. My '03 with 45k miles sits a lot.

CTD = 15.5 mpg @ 3.39/gallon
Infiniti = 25 mpg @ 2.95/gallon

You should be fine, you should only have problems if when you do drive the truck, it's only driven for a short period and never gets up to operating temperature. I have this problem, because I car pool with my father who lives 7 mile south of me. I try to take it out once a week on the freeway and haul some butt to compensate.

When I went on deployemnt for 4 months my truck was not started at all. My wife did not bother with it. I came home expecting at least a dead battery. To my surprise the truck fired right up within one turn. Got to love the new CR engines. Me too have a commuter car a Beetle TDI and my truck is only a Sunday church and grocery car maybe 50 miles a weekend.
