What is the official temperature of thermostadt?

I think someone may have stuck a 160 thermostadt in my 93 cummins before I owned it. It runs awfully cool and takes a long time to warm up. The guage is way under half way, more like a fourth. I haven't put proper guages in this oneyet.....just getting started.

I thought they should have a thermostadt at around 185 or 190, but I don't remember for sure the exact temperature. Could someone let me know the exact recommendationb?

Thanx,
Clay

It's supposed to start opening at 181 and be fully open by 203. 185 or 190 is close enough.

My truck never reaches operating temperature in the winter unless I block off the radiator. I hate blocking the radiator because that nullifies the IC and makes my truck run badly and smoke! So I live with the cold cab.

Yeah I just wear a couple layers and bare with it. The temp guage useually never goes past the second notch of the 5 on the temp guage in the winter anyway. Plus turning the air or heat on puts a noticable load on the engine and I'd rather have power than comfort.

If it gets cold and stays cold for a long time where you are try pulling the fan off. I've been doing this for several years now during the winter.

My truck isn't getting over 140 right now. It has gotten up to 160 when it was slightly warmer. My heat works just fine. Is there something wrong with my temp gauge?

So what is the maximum persistent running temperature for these trucks? What temperature is "overheating"?

I wouldn'y say it nullifies it, especially in winter. Heat exchange is a function of the relative difference in temperature between two objects (air inside the IC and air outside the IC, in this case) and the ability of those objects to transfer the heat. Air moving past the IC increases this function, especially in warmer weather. But in cold weather there is still going to be a considerable amount of heat transfer potential there due to the difference in the cold outside ambient temp and the turbo-warmed intake charge.

Why the truck runs badly and smokes with the grill covered in winter seems strange. The Cummins O&M manual I have says the grill opening should not be more than 75% covered and that's about where I ordinarily run mine much below freezing. My front cover does not seal up completely anyhow, but I only close it all the way when the temps get to zero or below, and have not seen any performance difference, either subjective or measured (EGT, obvious smoke, what have you). I'm sure with a differently modified truck this may well not be the case, as you have described.

I don't mean to be disagreeable, but I can have the covers on, floor it on the freeway and I get mucho smoke and it's a slug. I pull over, remove the covers, and it's back to it's old self immediately. The POD's need the IC to be fully functional I think.

Having air pass over the IC cools the air charge making it a little more dense. My guess would be that changing the pressure in the engine compartment has a greater effect. When you block the radiator it might be lowering the pressure in the area near the BAHF to the point it is causing the turbo to work harder for air. What does your boost gauge tell you. I may be way off base on this guess.

No noticeable difference in boost pressures.

You don't want to run them over 220.
