What is the official Cummins name/model/number for our engine?

I've heard they sell this engine for other applications (marine, power gen, etc.). It's got to have some sort of standardized Cummins designation. Anyone know what it is?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Interesting that I can't find an "ISBe" page on the Cummins website. There's references to Dodge Rams, but nothing specific to the engine. I'd have expected there to be a section for each major engine group they produce. Am I just missing it?

A manager friend who works for the parts department at International calls it the "B" engine.

In the current issue of Diesel Power magazine there is an article on the Dodge Cummins engines. They have a page listing all Cummins delivered to DC for trucks. List shows all engine configuration designations and model numbers. Seems the list was pretty long 50+ I think. That list may have also been in one of the latest TDR magazines. There is a different model number for each configuration, HO/SO, transmission, EPA requirement, etc.

The older 12V and 24V were 6BT's '6' for 6cyl, 'b' dunno, and 't' for turbo. Wouldn't the new ISB engine follow suite?

It breaks down like this:

6= number of cylinders
B= engine series (B series, or second smallest)
T= Turbocharged
5.9= displacement in liters

So, you might have a 4Bt3.9, or a 6bt5.9, etc/

Once they went to computerization, they called the electronics the "interact system". Thus, the Interact System B engine, or ISB as the 24V are known.

The Common Rail engines became known as the "echo" series.

So, a common rail 5.9, is the ISBe (e being echo, as far as I know).

So, ISB is 24V. 6BT is 12V.

There's also some additional alphabet soup for structural vs non structural block, and such. I also think there was a 6BTA designation, where the "A" indicated aftercooling (which was no always standard on the Cummins diesels, and didn't appear in Dodge trucks until 1991, if I'm not mistaken.

Excellent data - thanks! Why doesn't Cummins have a page on their site devoted to this (or ANY) engine? It's weird... they don't seem to have technical data on their primary products.
