Talking Off to pick up my brandie new CTD 610

Been lurkin for 6mo or so. Finally signed up (read below to understand why). Gotta say a big thanks to you all for helping push me over the edge. The info I've received has eased my mind and made me confident in my decision.

Thanks!

Yep, my 6 mo waiting period is up. Off to meet the delivery guy in Greenwood IN at 7am today. Anxious can't even describe it. Been waiting my whole life for my very own American diesel truck. My Dad's tired of me leaving druel all over his `99 PSD SD 350 CC LB 4x4 - let alone constantly beggin to drive it. Well the 6.0L was the last straw for me with the SD Ford. I'm a loyal Ford guy from birth - but this is more than I can bare. Dodge was always garbage in my eyes until I was pulling 12+k lbs goose-neck becing a `91 Ford CC Dually 4x2 7.3L NA diesel and got passed by a gen 1 Cummins pullin a 5-horse like is wasen't even back there. I'm weasin away at 47-53 and the Cummins' is keeping up with 65+ mph traffic. Then Ford dropped a turbo in the `94s and all was well. I was young, still at home and couldn't afford either so it didn't make much difference. It was still a Dodge, but I had a whole new respect for them. I finally get my finances together to afford a $42k truck and frod dumps the 7.3. Ok I'll wait. Now their talkin 6.4??? I saw chevy do this and suck, still suck. Not trying to do a flame job on Chevy but when it comes to workin rigs on the ranch in the heat of TX, they just don't hold up. I'm living proof with my ex-`96 Z-71 (whole other story - not a good one). About the only DM Chevys you see are owned by the rail roads. All the Ag and oil guys hace PSDs and CTDs. Well, I can say that I don't feel like I'm setteling. Always thought Dodges were much nicer inside than the Fords, especially the `00 ventage Laramies. Well I gues fate has just took it's toll. It was meant to be. My die-hard old man is anxious for pics and a test drive - nothin but good things to say about the 3rd gens - especially with the 48re. Pop may go Dodge if the `99 PSD ever breaks, looks like that'll never happen

Will let you know how the 300 mile trip home goes. I think I just peed my pants from excitement. Hope the excitement is still there when the first payment comes due

I am having a hard time not breaking the "Thou Shalt Not Covet They Neighbors..."!!

Welcome aboard and Please keep us informed on your NEW TRUCK!! I sure do hope your new ride gives you as much pleasure as my "New to Me" ride does!!! I have a hard time removing the smile when I drive mine. The wheels and guages are pretty much the only visual mods I have done, Removing the silencer ring hasn't been much of a difference for me.

Again, Congratulations and Welcome!

PS: With that truck, you should be able to drive over the traffic jams in Chi-town!!

Ever make it over to Eastern Iowa, look me up: I'm not far from I-80, and will have cold ones waiting!

I remember the day we went to pick up my truck from the dealer (I was 15 at the time). I've never been so excited in my life. From the second I turned the key, I knew it was meant to be. I've loved her ever since. This is starting to sound like a romance novel.

Congrats on the new truck. I hope it's as nice to you as mine has been to me.

TALK ABOUT BEING TRUE!!!

Last night, coming home from a pull, a girl I've known for a few years asks "Can I drive your truck?"

****, am I a sucker! She drove it about 40 miles, to Columbus, and I thought I was having a stroke the whole time. She did pretty good actually, especially for having a clutch that is TRASHED . I was calmed by the sound of that straight pipe rumbling at 1250 RPM up hills though (I think I've found some therapy for us, guys ), she wouldn't downshift, too scared she would screw up .

That was the first time I've ever been in my truck when someone else drove it. I think my heart rate is back to normal this morning, but man was I nervous last night.

Just thought I'd share my story,
Chris

BTW, this is the first girl that actually LIKES my truck. It's more of a work truck (flatbed, beacon light, stuff like that). She loved it

Big Blue, you're quick. I've been working way too much for about the last 5 years.

Redleg, Not yet, she wants to learn to drive a combine too, so we'll see how that goes. On the eye contact, NO, but I was glad . We did come over the top of one of the hills, one of those where it feels like the bottom falls out, and she screamed, and all I saw was a hand flying through the air AWAY form the wheel. Mini-stroke #2 . My buddy in the back was losing it (I didn't see too much humor in it, wonder why?)

I don't envy those of you with actually NICE trucks

Chris

AND STOP MAKING FUN OF ME I KNOW I'M A LOSER

She probably figures if you take her out in the combine, the buddy won't be tagging along as a third wheel

FastZilla, be prepared to have a permanent grin on your face and have people asking what causes it. Yes, the torque is addictive. This morning, again, my wife was complaining that one day I am going to break her neck because sometimes when I accelerate hard it snaps her head back. I just tell her to relax, not to try and resist the force and let the headrest do its job.

Ok, I made it back a-ok (as if I was worried). It was love at first site. The last CTD I drove was a `00. Have never drivin a 3rd gen. Picked her up with 9 miles, now have almost 400 miles on the clock.

For the MPG questions The computer started at 10.4, I started moving and it went to 11.9. It went up to 15.5 in about 100 miles then in the last 300 miles has creeped to 16.5. Manually cheked at 167 miles and got 12.9 mpg. Diesel is way cheaper in IN - 20 cents/gal diff in IL. Don't have the fast idle through the cruise control TSB - will be on that this week. Truck is quiet, I mean quiet. I don't understand. I sniffed the filler neck to make sure it was a diesel. Found out it was then kept sniffing Tranny does hunt a bit. Like the TC lock-up - reminds me of a `67 Fast back with a T-10 and a 300 hp 289. Nothin like raw pwr and wide ratios. No doubt the CTD has bawls.

Rented a Monte Carlo and drove with a friend out there. Left at 2am and arrived around 7:30am in Greensburg, IN. Got delayed for an hr trying to get to Avis at O'Hare. Friggin "L" popped up "Minor delay", waited 20 min then fetched a cab. One great thing about Chicago, never any cab shotages. Never mind the 4 mile $10 fare. Got an hr of shut-eye on the way out.

Saw the silver beauty on the trailer (pulled by a 2nd gen). Ear to ear grin was permanent for the next couple of hrs. After a Superman leap 3' in the air to get in, just kind of sat in silence for a few - you all know what I mean. Crawled under it for another few moments of awe.

Driving was pure bliss. Tried not to make it obvious. Didn't want to get pulled over for DUI of Cummins. I was being nice trying to break it in correctly. Had a serious problems with it though. Darn thing will NOT drive under 80 MPH - is there a TSB or recall for this. Not bad if I lived in Montana but in IL the limit is 65. I'm gonna have some problems... Once we got back to Chicago I developed another problem: The tires began chirping when the lights turned green... Could this be a drive train issue? Possible slick roads. Diesels are not this powerful, right??? Had yet another problem. Getting on I-90 I had a fish-tailing incident. I don't have a rear sway bar, could this be a suspension problem? I'll check for recalls.

Got home and the wife came out..........with a smile. That was a defining moment you know. Had another problem with it once I got it parked at home. The stinking thing talks, yes it talks!!! It says, "Eddie, pay attention to me", "I'm lonley, love on me", "don't leave me out here all alone..." .

I couldn't handle it. I had to go out and soothe my CTD. Had to take the dealers tatoo off her tail.......gate. Had to pick every piece of grass off the floor. Clean out all unnecessary items. Check the fluids, again. Sniff the filler neck again

All and all I'm very pleased. Wife is now becomming mad. CTD talk all last night (and 6 weeks prior). No husband for a whole day due to CTD. CTD tinkering all evening. CTD talk all evening. HAD to go out and get food - didn't want the CTD to cool down. I read teh owners manual. And now I'm on this forum!!! We need a counselor and I need an 800 number to call (CTD addiction hotline).

I already called all my friends on the way home to tell them all about it. Their sick of CTD talk.

I need you guys now more than ever!!!!

Why? To help you with your addiction, or get you to give it up?
