Off-line power, Can I get a better jump??

Off-line power, Can I get a better jump??

Hello everyone, I have a stock 05, and plan on keeping it pretty much stock other than a homemade intake tube. My question is, this is my first turbo vehicle, and first deisel. Is there a way to get a better jump off the line for these trucks without having to spend Hundreds of $$$ ?? Im used to my gassers when Im trying to make a left through an opening of traffic, and getting that jump to get through. This diesel, man.. theres been a few times where I was praying for that turbo to spool up quicker to get me through faster. Theres times where I had my foot to the floor, and and it felt like forever to get going through the turn. These trucks are great when your doing like 20 mph, and you 3/4 throttle it and the turbo spools and the truck takes off, but for a quick start off the line, I felt I can get out and run faster from the start. Today I was coming home from my local track, and was on an entrance ramp that was inclined, and you have to start from a dead stop from a stop sign, truck was empty other than me and 2 passengers, and I had my foot to the floor, and it felt like forever to get it going from a stop, but once the turbo spooled up, than the truck started pulling nice. I just wish These Rams had a quicker jump from a stop.

13 yrs of driving gassers, you get used to knowing you have that "jump" to get through a hole in traffic, but switching to the diesels, I gotta keep telling myself, remeber, you dont have that jump to get through.

You can power brake it to get the turbo spooled.

Hmmm...........

Probably under "30".

First "Real Truck" he's had the chance to buy.

Only bought this "Diesel" cause he could, not cause he needed it.

Not trying to be rude, OK, but you shoulda stuck with a V8 until you Got it outta your system. You'll understand what I'm saying when you hit, ohhhh, about 40.

From a dead stop, power brake to get boost built up is about the only way. Power braking from a stop light is a little tricky and takes pratice. Foot on brake and start adding a little throttle, then before you want to leave(other yellow light, etc) let off the brake just a little to bump forward a little. While letting off apply more throttle and boost will start building. Apply steady slow throttle and when ready dump the brake and put right foot on floor.

Of course a tighter TC and VB upgrade will get a lot more of the normal power to the wheels quicker also. Enough hp/torque upgrade will also produce better dead stop launches even before boost builds.

It's a DIESEL not a nitro funny. have to give it a chance to spool up the turbo and build boost. but once it does hang on to your ***. Not trying to be rude just realistic

Will be turning 31 in a a little over a month. Bought a diesel, because in about a year, I will be towing a 68 Nova back and forth from my local track. Bought the Diesel cause like getting 18 mpg in a 6,800 lb truck. Bought a diesel because like paying 30 cents a gallon less for fuel. This was my first an only oppertunity to buy a New truck because of my disibility situation. Didnt want to buy a butt ugly '06 . Wanted my '05 the way I wanted it, and ordered it, before time ran out. I have a limited income with my benefits, and wanted a heavy duty truck to last a long time, Have a better and longer warranty, than the other two brands, especially with a five year payment. 4th real truck I had, first diesel. Did plenty of towing with my GMC. No complaints.

I know all about power braking, and tourque converters, I put a nine inch in my camaro, and it was a totally different car after that.

I just thought, maybe a better flowing air filter or something would help. When I put my homemade tube in, Im gonna keep the stock elbows cause I heard that the baffles in the lower elbow help flow the air better in to the turbo.

Maybe when the "older" folks look at me with my Diesel, thay think the same as when I see a, ohhhhh 50ish guy in a Vette, shoulda stuck with the Crown Vic.

if its stock just put it on the floor until something happens. I would make some performance upgrades if i were worried about that off the line jump

Put a pyrometer gauge in it and a downloader and enjoy your NEW new truck. Intake and exhaust mods on a stock truck will not help, you need more fuel, like us properly valved guys

Not sure what the "30" comment has to do with anything. I'm 43, and this 05 CTD is my first Diesel and I feel the same way about it being a little sluggish on take-off, compared to my Hemi 1500.

They say the timing adance modification helps low end some, and fuel mileage. Might try that?

I have heard of this timing mod thing from a few posts here but Where does a guy pick one of these up and how much to I need to save up for???

Yes, on my daily commute, I have a couple of places where I only have a "stop" sign where there SHOULD be a light. So, you have to go RIGHT NOW when there is an opening. Better to "roll" into the throttle than mash it. You'll eventually find that, with a little practice, your truck will move pretty darn quick off the line when you want it to.

Hey Brisco, chill man, the guy is asking a legitimate question. I have driven turboed, NA, and supercharged gassers, trucks and cars, and this is my second turbodiesel. Turbo lag is a legit concern for someone who is not used to it. Ease up.

Yea, thought that was a little harsh also. I am well over 50 and this is my first diesel truck and I did not "NEED" it. I have owned 10-12 heavy duty 4x4 real trucks before this one, just not diesels. They would pretty much go anywhere. Actually this one is kinda mild compared to most of the others. This is my family vehicle and I dont expect to be off road like I used to be. I guess I hit my third mid life crisis and have reverted back to my teenage hot rod years. Until I bought this truck the last time I was on a drap strip was in the 70s. I have decided to BOMB this thing into the 12s 1/4 mile range. And turbo lag is irritating sometimes in normal driving and does take some getting use to.

Air intake and free flowing exhaust certainly seem to help turbo spool. But performance box(es), downloader, injectors, turbo(s) upgrade, etc. is the easiest way to get that gasser type jump off the line. Enough raw torque doesnt need turbo boost to get you rolling quick. Just my .02.

Manually down shift your tranny.Click the over drive off and giveer hell. No need to spend tons of money oin up grades.
