Odometer ???

I think mine is going out! Sometimes it works and sometimes only half the numbers show up? Anyone ever had this problem and how much MONEY am I looking at spending! I've been told only the dealer can do it b/c the new computer or whatever display they put in has to be calculated with the correct mileage! Just looking to hear what you all think and have experienced! Thanks in advance!

Odometer

In Mississippi they keep up with the mileage on the vehicle when its purchased and sold. If I get a used one with 200 plus miles on it and sell my truck in a year or soo I would get some eyebrows raised b/c I've only had my truck a month and it had 39K on it! There is no way I could sell it with an odometer that showed 245K in a year! I was told by a MS dealer that I had to leave the truck at the dealership and they would order me a new one with my exact mileage and it would have to be recorded with the state. The cost from them is going to be 700 for the display plus labor! I just thought some others may have experieced the same issues and maybe found an easy fix, but as usual my luck always brings the worst and most expensive! Thanks again!

go to a salvage yard and find one that has mileage that is close to what you are showing, no freaking way I'd go to a dealer for a 700 repair. I'm sure you can find one thats within a few thousand miles of your current display, in Canada alot of the larger salvage yards are computer linked so if they dont have the part your looking for, they can tell you who does have it. I can't see the States being any different.

check out this link to do a cluster test

My understanding is the dash odo isn't the only place mileage is stored.
Apparently the PCM holds the mileage reading even if the dash unit doesn't work.

If you want it done by the books and have the same mileage the dealership is your only option unfortunately. I would shop around to a few of them to try and get a better price personally.

There is one other thing you can do though. If you get another cluster you can take it somewhere (DMV? dealer? I don't really remember exactly where) and they will note the current mileage on your truck, the mileage on the new cluster, and include it with the records for the truck.
