I tow in fifth and as long as you got a stock turbo, there ain't no way you are putting any more torque through it than the next guy. As long as you have the fifth gear nut upgrade, you should be able to tow in fifth with all the HP in the world. As long as you keep the R's above 1600 or so. Otherwise, you can starve it for lube.

do any of you 4500 guys have any trouble keeping oil in the thing?
I have one with the big input shaft and a dual disk It seems to leak oil into the bell housing if you try to run extra oil in it, and no the vent is not plugged.
I never had a drop till I went to the big shaft, is the seal for the big shaft the same as a 5600 seal?

towed over 20K more than a few times..
tow in fifth when im on flat land all the time. just not with that much weight. I do tow a two horse or a sixteen foot tag or gooseneck (stock) in fifth and have even gone as far as a 24 foot empty single axle gooseneck on flat land...
Im at about 500 rwhp per say so they do hold... I just snapped mine tho not to long ago will start a thread soon, but it was after 200Kmiles of towing so they do reach a breaking pt eventually... im runnin a rebuilt from standard transmission as we speak...

Count how many times you shift into that gear, especially in city driving. Speed up, shift to third, then to fourth, then back to third, then second at a light, back to third, up to fourth, back to third . . .

I stripped both countershaft and mainshaft 5th gears clean of teeth, gutted the inerds of the 5th shift collar, blew third gear off the countershaft once, input shaft grenaded once, and never hooked it to a sled.
Sad thing about it was I didn't drive like an idiot all the time, really erked me that all the kids round here were runnin around grabbin and crammin gears and they had no prob at all outta theirs.
