nv4500: '97 2wd vs. '02 4wd

Will a '97 2wd nv4500 be used to replace a 4wd nv4500hd? I know the tailshaft housings are different, but would it be as easy as swapping my 4wd housing onto the 2wd case? My biggest concern is that I've seen some specs indicating the '97 used something like a 30 spline output shaft, and the '02 was a 31 spline. I'm guessing that means my transfer case won't fit on the '97?

The difference is:
the mainshaft on the 2wd is almost twice as long as the 4wd mainshaft.
That's why that tailshaft housing is longer on the 2wd.

You can use the tranny, only if you're gonna install a new fully splined mainshaft to fix the 5th gear issue.
