NV4500 or 5600?
All right guys, I have about had it with my auto. I am ready to make the change. I want to know from you guys what to go with. I would love the 6 speed, but for the price, I dont think it would be worth it. I run unloaded 70% of the time, the rest is never over 10,000lb. My only concern with the 5spd. is 5th gear. How big of a deal is it to fix? I know a lot of you have done the conversion, how do you like it? Hey, anyone have a standard they want to trade for a good freshly rebuilt auto?

I have a nv4500 that needs to be rebuilt, input shaft area.
I converted to a nv5600 about two weeks ago. I like it, but my trailer is 9600 empty and ussually around 17500 loaded. I pull with 3.54 gears too, the problem now is going slow enough to not get a ticket. I ve only pulled with it once since putting the 5600 in, and its cool.
My 4500 has a after market mainshaft for the 5th gear fix....
I m glad I did the 5600 swap, but yea it was expensive, about 3000 by the time I was done. If it lasts 10 or more years, fine money well spent.

my girlfriends truck has the 4500. i can tell i big difference between her truck and mine. mine accelerates loaded smoothly, her's is sluggish because of the jumps between gears. and my truck has a little over a 100hp more.

So far i love my 4500. The long upper gears are great for screwing around. Like you, I don't tow much. I almost went 5600, but up in my neck of the woods, getting my hands on one was tough, a new one not withstanding. I still spent $4500, but everything was new. If you tow light, it's preference I believe. They're both very fine transmissions, and with today's aftermarket, clutch combinations are endless. I converted to the 13" with the large hub. Very happy with everything so far. I've got 1K on the conversion. I hope as the trans breaks in, I will lose the notches between gears though. Waiting for the gears kinda sucks when you're looking a red light in the eye next to a potential victim.
I'd be curious to know if 4500's smooth out in short order, or if I should investigate a little.
Good luck, and I'm sure you know there are several conversion threads going to give some of the "non-written" details involved in an auto conversion.

I'm beginning to think I will go with the 4500. Once again, I think 6 gears may be too much for my driving style. I've been planning it for a long time, but I just cant decide! Decisions decisions!
What about clutches? I would prefer SBC, but 500-900 seems a little steep to me Are there any other good choices for 3-400HP range with occasional towing? Seems like SBC is all I ever see anyone run. Thanks for the replies in a tough situation

I converted to the 5600 about two weeks ago. I already had the SB clutch with the larger flywheel etc. All I did was send my disc back to change out the hub to the 5600 1 3/8 input shaft. It was in there for about 2 years and still looked new practically. Im not particuler abusive or easy on it.
For the 4500 nothiness.....I ground the corner down on the shifter to get 3rd easier. It helped. Becareful and think about it before you do it, Its the opposite corner you first might think. I just smoothed out the corner on the shifter ball inside th etrans.
