Question NV 021 PTO for automatic transmission?!?

I have the Chrysler Corporation 1994 Dodge Ram Truck (1500-3500) service manual and on page 21-402 it talks about the NV 021 PTO adapter. Here is what is says:

"The NV 021 PTO adapter provides power take-off capability for 2-wheel drive BR models. The adapter is available as an option on 2500 and 3500 models with automatic transmissions."

It goes on to say that, "The NV 021 is similar in appearance and mounting to a transfer case. A 4-wheel drive extension/overdrive unit is used on the automatic transmission to simplify PTO adapter mounting."

I actually am looking to add some PTO capabilities to a couple of the 2nd gen. Dodge Rams in my fleet. I normally mount them to the 5 speed Rams, but if I can get my hands on some of these NV 021 PTOs then that would be of great help to me as I have some automatic units that could use PTO capabilites.

I called my local Dodge dealer and the guy in the service department said in the 15 years he's been with the company, he's never had a request for any of these and/or parts for them and wasn't even aware they had such a unit. He cheked and said that they are discontinued and no longer available. I even had him check with some other dealers in the hopes that someone might have one laying on the shelf and he came up with nothing. He did give me 3 different part numbers for variations of the unit but couldn't/didn't explain the differences. Here is what he gave me:

52098489
52098355
52098489 (oops...same number as above....perhaps a typo on my part..).

I was wondering if anyone knows where I might get one or more of these units at? Or at very least, does anyone have a truck that was factory equipped with one of these? The guy at the dealer said if I got a VIN# from one of these trucks then he can learn more about them as I still might be able to get the proper shift lever assembly (bezel, boot, ****, etc.) from the Dealer. It's supposed to be the same as what's used on the 4 wheel drive models with a transfer case but the guy at the dealer said that there are different variations of those and not all the parts are still available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

John

I've dealt with a lot of PTOs and have never seen one that bolts on an automatic. Most autos with a pto run them off the 4wd transfer case. "The NV 021 is similar in appearance and mounting to a transfer case. A 4-wheel drive extension/overdrive unit is used on the automatic transmission to simplify PTO adapter mounting." indicates to me that they are adding a transfer case.

PTOs off the transfer case on a auto leave a lot of room for error that can be disastrous with some equipment. To use them while the vehicle is stationary the transfer case must be in N and the trans in gear. Unlike a manual tranny PTO a transfer case pto drive is dependent on which gear the trans is in, it will turn in reverse and faster with higher gears. On a manual trans the pto speed only varies with engine rpm and will not go in reverse.
Transfer case ptos are mainly used for ground speed applications where the pto rpm matches the mph such as a trailer with a drive axle.
