Ardmore drag strip on the 21st. I'll leave it up to RowJ to furnish the details on the track.

Since I'm not sure I'll make it, the camping area at the track may be a better option than The Ranch.

Probably won't make this one. My riding partner has a blank permission slip for the weekend. We are taking the ATV's and a tent and hitting the trail somewhere where there is a river we can jump in and cool off.

If plans change though, I would like to head up there. Hopefully my new CSS springs will be here by then :) (Thanks for the dent in my wallet RJ).

New owner so will have to check into camping there. It's just a one day "Fun Drags" event.
No local series, bracket racing going on that weekend so I suspect they will be shutting down Sat night?

Fun Drags- Gates open at 6 pm.........Racing starts at 7 pm till 10 pm (?)..... maybe 11 (?).

I'm drawing a blank on what we paid in past. Either 15.00 or $20.00 for as many runs as you want! I remember spectators are $7.50...if that helps:)

Question on the Twins testing (Very impressive by the way!!) What power level on pulse were readings taken?

Over the next week or so I would like to perform the same test with mine.. expecting much higher temps with HX35 and stock intercooler...

By the way... truck seems much quieter now... Looks a bit different as well [whistle]

Thanks!
All testing done on ADR2000 at PL05. BUT, I believe it won't make any difference. Higher setting=less throttle to maintain same boost.....No?
I played with different PL settings on 20 psi boost testing and saw no real difference in temps. Did not get scientific about it so...may be wrong??

To do apples to apples, can you set Coolmist to initiate at 20 psi, with max injection pressure at 40 psi?

Very curious to see if Cummins IAT reads different than my having egt probe 3" downstream of H2O/Mwth injectors!
That is if Quad ever gives us the software that is being shipped to full paying customers that purchase now! :(

""here is the information on the dyno day. it is the 28th of june at DR PERFORMANCE. we are gonna have food and drink available, it will be 3 runs on the dyno for $50. start at 8 am run til we have no one that wants to dyno or it becomes sunday. we want it huge and a big blowout. ""

this is the address

Back to 'Stealth Look'......huh?

Yep she looks like a work truck now! :D Kinda like it! I'll be ready for these treads to wear out sometime this winter so I can get a decent AT probably on there... no larger than 285 though... Towing is just SOOOOoooo much nicer with the smaller tire.

More questions about testing... How long did you run each test? You said til the reading settled, but I know at 50psi my temp is never gonig to settle! it will just keep climbing til I back out of it... so by settle do you mean slow down? Like 10secs? 20 secs? at given boost? How much time between runs? Have to imagine there is a fair amount of CAC heat soak... Heck after a hard run I can idle the truck for 5 mins and still not get the primary to secondary temps under 140*!!

Assuming truck is at full operating temp? As well as oil? figure heak soak from radiator and motor into CAC may be worth some temp as well?

Just curious want the best comparison possible...

Settled fine at 20,30,40 psi.
For 50 psi...around 100, it would slow, than start to back track....readings would jump back and forth few degrees. I just listed higher number at that time. Starting from abound 20 mph, in lower gear, worked well.
....Have to imagine there is a fair amount of CAC heat soak... Heck after a hard run I can idle the truck for 5 mins and still not get the primary to secondary temps under 140*!!
Heat soak not a problem, IMO. I agree about high temps at idle, but start moving slowly and it drops back down quickly. Maybe my heat shield makes big difference.... or maybe my Scotty II cowl hole is magic.:D I did have to exit Hwy 75 and drive back down the hill (about 2 miles between exits).... so that helped. All tests were done up a slight grade as all level areas here are heavily patrolled.

....Assuming truck is at full operating temp? As well as oil? figure heak soak from radiator and motor into CAC may be worth some temp as well?
Maybe, but my primary awareness was how quickly the CAC cools the IAT air down....once you start moving. Based on our EGT comparisons, I would guess my Hasiley CAC is no major advantage. But it may shine better in this test??

Quad finally updated software for Adrenaline so I can read Intake Air Temps in the cly. head.

Went out and played this afternoon (OAT was 94*). At 70 mph cruise, and with my Quad EGT probe still mounted on my Airhorn.... readings were 92* at the Airhorn.... 132* at the IAT sensor inside the head!

40* difference????? Part of me says maybe. Part of me says no way the difference can be that many degrees!

I guess I'd question the 92* airhorn temp with a 94* ambient. I wouldn't expect the intercooler to be that efficient.

Good point! That was a quick unofficial test. I did go out this early am and readings were still 35-40* different (IAT being warmer) at all boost settings.
Example: 78* OAT....30 psi boost.... Airhorn temp probe - 95*...... IAT - 135*.
FWIW - H2O/Meth cools IAT down 30-40* at all levels of power.

FOX13 - Got rear seat storage rack cleaned up and installed... workss perfectly!

red ones just seem to be the ones with good deals, i think at this point it would have to be an 04.5+, so i can access all the extra power with the smarty.

as far as carfax, i hear its a HOAX, only tells you if the vehicle has had SERIOUS SERIOUS damage. like flood, or totalled... but that is all i have heard i dont know how true that is.

AggieJustin

Since you've got a VIN, I'd call a Dodge dealer and see if they can list a service history for you.

I did that when my other half bought her car. I checked with a dealer local to where the car was from (based on Carfax), then they checked the full manufacturer history and told me each time it had been in and what for.

The 35* diff is understandable. You have the air basically hitting the dead end before entering the chamber, warm block, residual heat transfer when the intake valve opens, etc.

Good looking truck! But then, I'm a little partial to RED.

It could be the pic, but it's listed it as a tan interior, but looks gray to me?

The only thing I would question is the ball in the bed and nearly 25k miles per year. Being it's from OK, probably don't have to worry about floods, but I would check very close for repaired hail damage. No doubt, the price is good.

For the price it looks like a nice truck Max! It says on the Ebay ad that it is an 05....not an 04.5. So, if it is an "early" 05 you want to be aware of plastic intercoolers. You can always replace it but just something to be aware of as they can blow out even stock......and certainly WILL blow out if heavily bombed. Dodge realized the error of their ways later and went back to metal intercoolers in late 05. The trans should still be an NV5600. Later in 05 model year they came out with the G56 trans. Either are fine.

04.5's came out in Jan. 04. But this one would be one of the first 05's apparently. They have all of the power (04.5-07 5.9s) so your good to go with Smarty. Good luck with it.

But I'd still have to hold out for a 4x4![laugh]

I used Carfax when I bgt my 02 in 03. Had 13,000 miles and dealer told me Tx rancher bgt auto so his wife could/would drive it... and hated it.
Faxfax told me -
-One owner,
-Originally registered as a personal vehicle
-Originally a Texas Title; With exact date sold,
-Date registered and date traded back to dealer (for 6 speed dually).
-No severe damage...."Guaranteed"
-No DMV reports on this VIN # being in any accident.
-No odometer tampering..."Guaranteed"
-No Mgf Buyback (lemon Law) reported (as reqiured by DMV) ...."Guaranteed"

Knowing it had been on dealers lot for 3 months allowed me to low ball the price with confidence....more than covering the $20.00 pd to Carfax.

... residual heat transfer when the intake valve opens, etc.
Had not thought about that! Only 20* difference at startup so you're probably right!
Just seems like a lot of heat soak considering how briefly the the new air sits in the head.
(1/16th of a sec at 2000 rpm, by my calculation).

It does seem fast, but then you think about how quickly air is rushing through the intercooler and the temp drops that you see there. Heat transfer on the volume of air we are talking about occurs pretty rapidly.

It is interesting to see the actual numbers to get a real picture of how things are working.

RJ

Several factors influence the temp readings; the airhorn probe is sheathed (& grounded, I assume) type K - what is the in-head IAT? Also, the intake charge is shedding heat to the airhorn, while absorbing thermal energy from the head. Without the same type of probe and same method of sampling, I wouldn't regard delta temps of less than 10*F as significant.

Im probabl going to santa fe, new mexico for a baseball scholarship. And it doesnt look there is any chapter there so I will be a far-off memeber.

You should contact Chris Brahs (cbrahs) out in Albuquerque - there's a small but dedicated group of diesel bombers out there that has a lot of fun together... bunch of good guys.

I guess I'd question the 92* airhorn temp with a 94* ambient. I wouldn't expect the intercooler to be that efficient.

Even the OEM CACs are pretty efficient; ~ 2psi pressure loss across it and removes enough heat from the compressed air to produce single-digit differentials... i.e. the '05 with stock parts runs about 5-10*F higher in the airhorn than ambient during normal part-throttle driving, and won't climb higher than ~ 25*F differential at max fueling (usually run out of road and/or gear before it completely stabilizes).

Don't know what makes an 04.5, unless it's the G56 Trans? I know the 04's don't have them and the 05's do.
You do know about Carfax,,,,Right?
Good Luck!
RJ

Biggest difference for the '04.5 is the switch from the HE341 to HE351... larger compressor & duty-cycle modulated wastegate solenoid.

Had not thought about that! Only 20* difference at startup so you're probably right!

RJ

Think of the intake charge's short duration through the CAC and how much thermal energy is transferred... with inlet temps of 350-500*F and outlet temps in the 100-150*F range.

For a hyperbolic example, consider the exhaust of a hair dryer.

i am not sure if i am driving my truck incorrectly, but at the next meet all ya'll can tag team her[tapdshut] to see if the same results pop up..

about half the time i start in second gear, let out the clutch with no addtion of the the skinny pedal, and about half the time it works and goes fine and smoothly...

the other half the time, the RPM's drop to about 400-500, the JUMP up to 1100 or so giving this wonderful bucking affect.

OR, from a rolling idle in 1st 2nd 3rd gear, i push the skinny pedal and there is no response or a "dead pedal" for about 1/2 second then it JUMPS up again creating a nice bucking affect

lately the idle has been rougher, i am leaning toward injector issue??

all the symptoms have been around long before the introduction of jet a.

affect/effect i never know which one to use, always troubled me in highschool.

Used Edge EZ probably best bang for the buck! Ck the Classified Section.
Smarty probably best mileage increaser.... from my experience.
Combine either with a set of Bosch 275 injectors and he will get max possible mileage..... if he can keep his foot out of it!:D

Maybe just the injectors would be even better?? (Don't know anyone that has tried it.)

I really didn't notice much mileage difference with the EZ, but it did run better. With just me RV275's, I can squeeze out 20 MPG highway if I stay below 65 MPH.

AggieJustin

I'm with the other guys, a used Edge EZ would fit the bill nicely. Or if you find a deal on a Edge Comp (which could happen), you could do that as well and not that the wire till he's ready for more.

Maybe he could get a set of Jammer 3's from someone we know if he's not going to use them. [laugh]

Well after much thought and complete disregard for all of your opinions I decided to try and give the duals a try...

Install was about an hour every day this week... Lots of welding, grinding, cutting, repeat to make it fit the way I wanted... Gooseneck hitch also made things more difficult! [verymad]

May try a few different things to see what I like, but I am pretty pleased with how things turned out..

Basic Rear shot, I think it tucked away pretty nicely:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff169/bnold123/IMG_0982.jpg

Little smoke pour... Looks really uneven in this shot for some reason... The big shadow effect on the right side isn't helping anything... The smoke is actually very even when driving or revving in place... was surprised.. A well this pic just doesn't show it...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff169/bnold123/IMG_0981.jpg

Pass side view, very little able to be seen (lots of cutting welding etc.. to get them to tuck up like that!! In stock form I thin they would have been dragging on the ground! [duhhh])
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff169/bnold123/IMG_0986.jpg

Drivers view:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff169/bnold123/IMG_0984.jpg

Little close up underneath, really have to get down low to see the pipes.. Haven't put my spare back in yet but it does fit...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff169/bnold123/IMG_0987.jpg

Well what you think?? Different huh? Black paint made all the difference in the world.. Painted all the piping with that flat black grill spray...

Sounds normal +/-. Your 03 probably came with a 190* T-Stat, like my 02?
I switched to a Cummins 180* and love it. Sits at 180-185* all day long....even hauling up to gross weight on a 95* day.
Seems to flow much better than the Dodge modified Cummins 190* T-Stat. Even at Race track...never goes much higher than 200*.

I know Charlie and RJ are talking about something else...(the back flush thingy)....

But you can also drain and refill your radiator every so often too. No need to "flush" if you do this regularly. Just drain all you can from the draincock on the radiator (maybe around 4-4.5 gallons) and replace it with Zerez G-05 and distilled water 1/2 and 1/2. I started adding this procedure to my 20k mileage maintenance interval. It won't get all of the coolant out, but it will get enough out that it's like keeping new stuff in it all the time by doing it regularly. And another tip I picked up from RJ....is to suck out (I use a cheap autozone plastic thingamijiggy) and replace the power steering fluid with fresh ATF +4.

Not using ATF of any kind. I'm using Valvoline Synthetic Power Steering Fluid...when I can find it. Non Synthetic Valvoline when I can't.
Don't know on 3rd Gens, but 2nd Gens say not to use ATF due to Hydro Boost assist to the brakes.

Thanks, I only need them with small amout of tread... maybe 5000 miles left. Problem is I'm really only comfortable racing on E rated rubber.... if there really worn.
I've checks about 6 tire shops and all say same thing! I've found lots of P265/75/16's but not interested. Think I need 10 ply LT's at a minimum.
If you know where some are .... let me know! I'd pay $100.00 and come get them.

........

RJ

Yeah I knew you were using PS fluid. My point to Max was just to not overlook that as a maintenance item.........and thanks to you for bringing it to our attention. (it's the most overlooked fluid on our trucks...[laugh])

The owners manual on the 3rd gens says to use ATF +4. Not sure why 2nd gens would be different.....but the ATF I put in at the last meet seems to be working fine. Brakes too!

Thanks, but your are 17". That's my problem...... no surplus of used 265x16" cause all trucks for last 4 yrs have gone to 17's.
Looking outside the box and may have a solution. Stay tuned!
But if any second gens want to part with your spares because you have gone oversized... let me know!

RJ

i was just thinking you could switch out with our spares at the track, run and then switch back.

thats all i was getting at anyways.

Redline is up in the air? Waiting to hear from Matt . If he's going to Ardmore with his new truck, I'll be there...watching. If not...probably Redline!
On a big savings kick for rest of June so maybe nowhere?? Went way over budget on my truck the last 60 days... Wheels, Pulse, Springs, Track Bar Bushings from Mike, RAD, Tranny Solenoid & Transducer .... and a few other goodies!

Anyone interested - The least expensive item (LazarSmiths Offset Trackbar Bushings) did more than anything else, except needed tranny parts. Tightened up front end nicely...drives like a new truck! I highly recommend them for anyone over 100,000 miles! If you haven't lifted your front end...get non-offset bushings. :)

Kind of cool....gives a 5 sec countdown and then starts timing and runs till the speed (corrected for tire size) hits 60. :)

Best was a 5.70 sec, with 35" tires and 2 wd. Had a little tire slipage so could probably do a bit better! That was at about 8300 lbs!
