Now my transmission...

... is acting up.

Drove fine on Friday night, yesterday I pulled out the driveway and the thing won't upshift. Got it out on the road and it would upshift if I let off the go pedal. There's also a "clackitty-clack-clack" sounding noise coming from under the truck but it really sounds like it's coming from the exhaust, not the trans. It can be heard intermittently at idle and while coasting, but not under power. Throttle cable/linkage seems ok, not binding or anything that I can see. Today I adjusted the front band and now it actually seems worse.

Please help... I'm desperate... and I'm sick and tired of working on my truck.

It's in my sig... ATS Stage IV. I just keep forgetting to call my installer, or ATS, and get their input.

Try calling Bellflower Transmission, either speak with Larry or Bob. They install ATS trans as should be able to help you. Nice guys to boot.

I just helped my buddy change out his stock tranny (99' Sport 3500) for a fully built ATS unit.
His old tranny was exhibiting the same symptoms as you described. When I opened up the pan to swap the valve body electronics I found a large piece of what was once a retaining clip on the pan magnet!
Not sure exactly what part of the trans it came from but my only thoughs were "that can't be good"

I'm not saying that this is what's wrong with your tranny, but you say you adjusted the front band, what about the rear? Do it and check for pieces/parts in the pan.

I checked the pan, nothing. I saw on ATS's website that they set the front band to 3 turns out instead of the factory setting 1 and 7/8... that would explain why it feels worse after I adjusted the front band (I used the facory spec) so I'll have to set that back.

I don't think that will fix my problem though... but I'll get this figured out eventually.

The clip was probably from the park rod in the valvebody. Its never good to have parts floating around but that specific clip is not really needed. All it does is keep the rod from coming out which is impossible when the valve body is installed.

After looking again, I saw the throttle cable was hanging half-way out of the APPS housing... problem solved.

Could someone post a picture of how their throttle cable is routed from the APPS to the the transmission? I'm concerned with the transmission end of the cable... mine is working fine for the most part but I still feel like it's holding 1st longer than it needs to (under light throttle) and wonder if perhaps the cable is binding.

Thanks.

It's probably just out of adjustment. For those of you who think the Dodge tranny sucks?? Get real, while they some some issues they are a relatively reliable piece. You can do a lot with them for not a lot of money. One of my Dodge work trucks has 160K on the original trannie. It has an 8k trailer behind it 85% of its life!!

The best trannys I have found were from HTS. When my tranny was rebuilt I droped my 1/4 mile time and got better fuel mileage. You should go check them out. All of the ATS and DTT tranny have half of the stuff done for the same cost. Even a tranny from Suncoast cannot take the abuse. I would check them out.
