Novice LOOKING for 1st gen.
Boys, What should I look at and for in a 1st gen. 4x4 truck. I've owned a *ord 6.0 and got rid of it because it liked the shop more than my house or the road. I just started looking but, it sounds like if it's in decent running shape I should be OK for the time being. Is there any years between 88-93 that were supposed to be better than the other. I've heard that mileage shouldn't be an issue as long as it's running good at the time. I'm interested in a 250 or 350, DW, 4x4, 5sd. Where all the manual tranny's the same. What kind of MPG should a well running, unloaded truck get. I have many more questions that I will hassle you guys with later. Today was the 1st time I've seen the sight and it looks like you all share good information. Thanks

If you find one of any year it's almost guaranteed to run good. I've never heard of anyone having one that just ran like absolute crap. The Cummins just seem to be that good!
The 89-91.5's are NON-Intercooled, 91.5-93's will be intercooled. As far as what to look for in a truck will depend primarily on what the truck will be used for. If you look really hard and don't mind paying an almost New price. You can still find them in almost showroom new condition. But if you're just looking for a farm truck to drag a gooseneck around, those will be easier to find and obviously won't command such an extreme asking price.
Good luck, and keep the questions coming.

Just watch out for rust. The floors and rockers rust, and that's not too bad to fix- but if you see even bubbles above the windshield you are in for major bodywork.
