"Not so experienced" question

What has to happen for the intial turn-over to start our engines?

lets see if i understand you correctly. you want to know what sensors, pumps, inputs, and measurements must be complete for the truck to start and run?

Mostly just what causes the intial turnover but all that would be great!

Besides the fact that your starter turns the flywheel, which turns the crank shaft. The crankshaft moves the pistons, which compress a air/ fuel mixture. Being compressed the mixture gains temperature, and at start, is assisted by glow plugs to create an explosion. Soon after there is enough heat to sustain the burning, until you turn the key to off which stops the flow of fuel. Does this help or am I not understanding the question?

uh hum (clear throat) our trucks don't have glow plugs... We have grid heaters in the intake stream that heat the incoming air...

Okay...I was speaking in general...I appologize. I don't know everything about our trucks, but if the guy wanted a general over view...thanks for the info though.

Speaking just in the firing up aspect. When you turn it over, the piston comes to the top compressing the air and heating it. At a point, the injector injects diesel fuel into the cyl. The heat of the compressed air ignites the fuel and forces the piston down creating a chain reaction that raises another piston to start the cycle again. For this to happen, the fuel pump must be supplying fuel to the injectors.
