Not another lift pump failure!
I notice my truck is getting hard to start in the mornings since it's cold out, but I also noticed my fuel pressure is doing some pretty strange things. I put a new lift pump from Cummins West in last February. My pressure was 13.5 idle, 12 cruising and 10 WOT. Now it's 10 idle, 7 cruising and 4 WOT. I sat parked in the driveway tonight and watched it fluctuate from 10 psi, up to 12 psi, down to 8 psi then back up to 10 psi. I changed the fuel filter when I put the new pump on in February. Only put 6,000 miles since then. What do you all think? Would the pump be covered under Cummins warranty?

Just got off the phone with Cummins West. They said the pump has a 6 month warranty. If it was a Cummins part it would have a 1 year warranty. He called it a BMC part so only six months. Six months was up October 8th. :'( He said make sure the electrical part of the pump was good. I said I'm not good at checking electrical things. He said bring it out today and they will do an electrical check on it. If electrical is ok, he has a new pump in stock and he will give me a good deal. The last pump I got from them was about $150. We'll see what happens after work today.

My personal opinion on this is your injection pump is on its way out. Your pressures are fine for starting and general cruising so dont be surprised if the injection pump takes a dump in the near future. If your close to being out of warranty on the truck I would take it in and have the problem atleast logged and dont mention that you put a new lift pump on it, they might get the bright idea to deny you warranty for the inj pump.

Forgot to mention Cummins tested the voltage or whatever. They said it looks like the lift pump is bad. He only charge me $117 for the new pump.

Went to the dealer today over this problem, had a chat with the teck for a while he told me this.10 psi full load is the least you should ever get anything less change the pump. Also he told me I should go with a different pump when I get to 100k, but said do not send over 18 psi to the injector pump or big problems if you do.

UPDATE:
The last few days while waiting for the weekend install of my new lift pump, the pressure during first morning start up fluctuates all over the place. Then after it gets warmed up, the pressure is normal. I did notice that my idle pressure is a little better now than last week. Before, I didn't see more than 13 at idle. Now, I see almost 14. This is the highest pressure I've seen with this pump. Should I change out this pump or wait?

Well not to drain your hopes,I just changed the lift pump on my bros truck,it was doing the same thing,well I had to tow him home night before last injector pump failure,after we installed the lift pump,pressure was great and it ran fine,and then in two days it just quit,took out filter and it was dry.

That surprises me...my dealer said dodge had put out a bulletin and dropped that figure to 8psi....

I have put 2 new lift pumps on my truck and I could pull both of them below 8 psi even with the high flow banjo bolts and a new filter.
I hope your inj pump isnt cooked but some of the probels you describe do point to it.
First thing in the morning if your intake heaters are cycling you will find the fuel pressure does the same thing since there is a serious voltage drop caused by the heaters and in turn the voltage supply to the lift pump also drops causing a drop in pressure.
