View Full Version : North Texas DTR #8 April Thread

Figured I'd go ahead and start a new thread for April, since March meet is over.
I just got back from NYC last night after a week (my son was on spring break). Wow, what a trip! Now understand that this is not my typical vacation which usually involves an RV and an ATV. But it was very interesting seeing New York in action. I found most people there to actually be friendly........but just don't get in their way and slow them down....[laugh].
We went to,,,,,,in no particular order........Museum of Natural History, Statue of Liberty, NYSE, Ellis Island, Times Square (3+ times), Saw the St. Patrick's day parade, ice skated at Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Saks 5th avenue, Walked the Brooklyn Bridge, watched "Phantom of the Opera" at the Majestic, Ground Zero, The M @ M store, Empire State Building Observation Deck, Radio City Music Hall, Grand Central Station, Shopped at Macy's, the Restaurant on Seinfeld, Rode the Subway many times, Ate at numerous pizza places and restaurants, walked many miles just observing the architecture and history.
This is one of those trips everyone needs to make at least once. IM not sure when I will be going back again.......but I must say I was impressed and had a blast. This was definately something different, for me.

I too have been to NYC...Once!!! Very interesting place! I went in November 2001 and visited Ground Zero among the other standard tourist sites. It moved me deeply to see the destruction. People openly wept and prayed. My most vivid memory was the smell of Ground Zero. I have never experienced anything like that before, or since. Definitely one of those places you need to visit once in your life. When and where is the next meet? I may actually try and show up.

its out there by redline raceway east of dallas, i think its even the same exit number, we had a blast. then it rained. then we had a muddy blast. my cummins will never be clean again. did a lil 2wd drive action in the gumbo mud out there, quite possibly due to a little to much [coffee] but o well it was fun, no one got hurt and the carnage was not to severe.
now low on $$ so prob won't make ennis.

Well folks, I made it back safe and sound. Italy was great, even better that we were there outside of the main tourist season so everything wasn't just packed. Venice was calm and laid back. Man can those people drive a boat. Made me ready for lake season. Rome on the other hand was just crazy. Small cars and scooters everywhere. We were surprised to see a '88-'93 Chevy 1500 parked on one of the streets. Probably the biggest vehicle we saw aside from the buses. I was definitely glad to get back to the truck last night.
So what's the plan for the next meet? Now that I no longer have a full plate of getting ready for a wedding, hopefully I'll have some free time. And I can start on a list of projects that need to be done now that the ol' girl has rolled over to the backside of 200K.

Just got back from a 5 day trip to Altoona, PA. Flew into Pittsburgh and drove over to see the wife's family. Visit went well, no one got shot and nobody had to call 911.
Glad you got back OK Justin. Meant to tell you to keep your wallet in your front pocket in Rome :) Those little brats outside the Colesium are pretty sneaky pickpockets. Venice is cool and I liked it better than Rome.

after doing 1 and 2 my nervousness went away. ( i have never done anything to my truck) . . it seems to idle smoother? maybe? or i am just trying to feel a difference . who knows. .

So does anyone have any steering stabilizer recommendations? I need to get my 3rd gen trackbar and bracket installed and I'm figuring after 200K that the original stabilizer is probably shot.
I've seen the Rancho and the like before, but wanted to see what works well and what didn't.

I tried a Sky Jacker and it was junk, IMO. Rancho does not seem any better.
I finally got fed up and bgt a good one... last one you will ever need. Nitrogen filled and adjustable!
Very noticable difference with oversized tires.:D
And gets rid of that silly tapered end fitting!

Recommend changing only trackbar first, so you get to feel that big difference by itself. JMO.

I wonder if those use the same tapered stud? Last time I went looking for one, couldn't find anything that had the tapered stud, they all assumed a straight bolt.
I tried a Sky Jacker and it was junk, IMO. Rancho does not seem any better.

Very nice, and I wouldn't mind getting rid of the tapered stud. I'll have to figure out a method for breaking the current one loose. Might need to start soaking in PB right now as I imagine it's seated well.
Since I have the parts for the track bar, I'll probably do it first. Then get the stabilizer.

..
i am very very disappointed.
the plan was July 2010 after completion of an optional international internship. . . that has fallen through. .
so i will leave here in May and take an on-line English class after that i will have a "certificate in wind energy technology" (if i do not get the boot from the program, i have said some harsh things) that should get a foot in the door and a slightly slower start than what i had planned with the associates degree.
SO realistically if i would have not come to school and just jumped into wind industry it would have benefited me a lot more than my current plan. and i would have saved about 11k . . . [verymad]
^^^ my point from that is, hands on experience out weighs the heck out of internet learning and minimal lab experience.

So do they give any reason they are not guaranteeing what they promised? Do you have any legal recourse? Was there a contract? Is any of this related to the recession?

I have a bachelors degree. They pay a little bit extra ($100 a month:rolleyes:..........been the same since 1973) if you have one but you have to have 45hrs in anything to be hired.......or, now, have 4 years military with an honorable discharge. Alot of the recruits that have prior military seem very sharp and adapt well to field training. (im an FTO, by the way)
In today's economy.........I feel extremely blessed to have my job.

they (the school ) has blamed the economy, but i think that is simply an escape goat. we have newspaper articles with quotes from school officials. with talk of the jobs and internships. no real contract, and legal action should be in the near future.
the school wants to keep me here "they have high hopes for me" but i do not want to be at an institution that LIES to me. and i am broke, so job time it is for me.
when i was in highschool i wanted to be a cop, but did not pursue it to much, at the end of this semester i should have 41-43 credits.

Rough weekend, but lots of fun - we decided to attend Buda last minute.
Steph & I drove down to Elgin Friday night & I installed Romario's Street Sleepers until 05:30 (started about 02:00) - 2WDs suck w/o out a lift, and all the whisky & bourbon Justin brought out probl'y didn't help, either... I never saw Tyler slur his words so much, though I did miss the time last year when he rowf'd on the commode & passed out.
Buda was pretty wild, with over 130 trucks lined up for the rollers, and dang near continous burn-outs & doughnut smokeshows from morning 'til night... we sat in a great spot to watch. Air was hot & the sun was worse - no shade for a mile - so I laid up under the truck for a spell like an old hound dawg.
Popos showed up a few times - I'm amazed no one got hurt and no trucks were smashed... there were some crazy drunks vying for biggest doughnuts in the cul-de-sac. :o
Even though ART said they'd run the dyno 'til everyone strapped down, they shut down early & bumped Romario to Sunday, so I didn't have a chance to help him with the dyno tune (we left for Waco Saturday night).
I don't remember seeing so many diesels even at HRP!

Don't run Smarty on kill with pressure box turned up for longer than a quarter mile run or 300' hook... 30-40 continuous 4th gear doughnuts at WOT exceeds the above recommendation.

Seriously............i have had a problem for a few months where my A/C blower wasn't working properly. It would sometimes cut off on it's own or just start blowing weaker. Other times it wouldn't come on at all unless I bumped it with my flashlight or my foot.
Well I finally got around to it and replaced the electric motor. I think it cost $130 or so from the dealer. Anyway....THANK GOODNESS........it seems to be working great now. Just wanted to share......some sort of good news.[roll][roll]........and just in time for Spring/Summer.

Well I am happy you someone has some good news [laugh] of course I am going to put my NV5600 out of my blue truck into my red truck to get me home on and not worry about the blue trucks tranny untill it at least has an engine it it that runs [duhhh] soa few modifications will hve tobe made for that swap but I should be done with it by Friday I hope so that I can haul my blue truck to Texas and then be back at school Monday at 7 am :(
Some more good news! My truck is back in 'better than ever" form! Has just not felt right since new head, fuel pump and turbos.
Could not pinpoint exact problem till I changed out VP-44, last week.
Discovered I had an HO (#28) pump installed when engine was put back together!
Brett at Ind. Injection agreed to cover his dealers mistake and is replacing with a new SO (#27) pump. Wasn't even his error... so big thanks to Brett!
I had always heard/read that an SO CTD would not run on a HO fuel pump. Not true! They just run irratically... occassional rough idle, less top end, more white smoke on start up, chugging on cold starts, some missing at cruise with light throttle and poor milege. All things I was attributing (possibly) to piston crown damage when my Firerings let go.

Is what happen is traffic stopped right in front of us and there was a lot of loose gravel on the highway and there was no stopping for us and hit a mini van but I had one person with me and je got no ticket but I am not sure what our insurrance companys are going to do! BTW RowJ ya the trip is 1300 miles and it wasn't bad we got to Ok at noon saturday and didn't leave till noon on sunday so I had plenty of time to spend with familly, I would have made it to school on time if it wasn't for the wreck! So here's the question for the day.
Normal fuel pressure on my truck runs right around 16psi at idle and 14-15 on the road. But I've noticed lately that after some extended runs down the highway, my pressure will climb to 20-25psi at idle with the working range being just slightly below that. When I shut down and restart, the pressure goes back in the normal range. Very hit or miss, but only seems to show up on longer trips at highway speed.
I'm thinking the return valve in the banjo on the VP44 might be sticking closed or getting blocked somehow causing the pressure spike, then when I shut down and pressure falls off, it clears itself.
Other theories?

I don't remember the details, but someone else on here was having the same FP problem your are seeing.

Tapped into the outlet from the fuel filter canister. Rubber hose from there to the fuel pressure sender mounted at the firewall. 0-30psi electric Westach gauge.
First time I noticed it was at the end of February on a trip down to Lufkin. Pressure at highway speed was 18psi and would hit 20psi when I stopped at idle.
The other week coming back from Ardmore with the trailer, I was running around 22-23psi and was about 26psi when I stopped. That's the highest I've seen.
Just don't want to tax the ol' stocker LP any more than I have to...[laugh]

My Autometer electric gauge use to have a mind of it's own... after 40,000 miles. Sometimes read high also. Pulled down as expected, under power, but idled anywhere from 14-18 psi. Never felt or sounded differently...so didn't worry too much.
My guess was always sending unit?
Westach is suppose to be a cut above Autometer but....?
RJ
AggieJustin
04-16-2009, 09:29 AM
I've had good luck with the Westach gear. I had one sending unit failure with my 0-15 setup. The sender developed an internal leak and had to be replaced. When I switched to the 0-30psi gauge, I gave the old setup to my brother-in-law and it's still running on his truck.
I'll have to pull out my mechanical test gauge and check the pressure to confirm the gauge reading under normal circumstances, just have to find a Schrader valve someone to put into my test port. Anyone know a good place to pick up a Schrader with a 1/8" NPT male end?
I've got a mechanical DiPricol on the shelf that I need to get installed at some point. Just gotta find some time to get up under the dash and dig through some wiring (couple of other gremlins to track down while I'm in there). I hate having to go into the wiring more than I have to.

I downloaded the Smarty Beta 4.20 tune the other morning, truck fuels hard down low but not much above 2k, EGT's are very low takes them a while to get to the 1500 range. Boost gets to 38 a bit faster.

I have all those settings on mine and I believe most newer ones they sell already have the tq man. settings and timing etc.

Bob. "
when i plug the smarty in it says 4.1 , the manual says some tunes do not have the adjustable option.

Off topic question time:
Does anyone have any experience with a stuck key in the ignition switch of a early 90s model Chevy truck? My parents have an old farm truck that this happened on this weekend. It's been parked in the barn for a while loaded with old feed sacks and other trash that couldn't be burned because of the drought. We tried to get it started, but no luck. The key was working fine at the time. So we turned the key on and pulled it into neutral (auto trans) to pull it out of the barn. We moved it out, puts the trans back in park, but the key cylinder won't turn back from the on position. It turns normal to the start position and returns to on like normal, but it won't go back. Doesn't matter if you push in, pull out, nothing.
Not overly concerned because this truck may get sold "as is", but it would be nice if there were a simple fix so I could try to get it running.

Already tried that one. That was my first method of problem resolution. If I use any more force, I figured I'd either snap the key off or destroy the column. Neither one of those would help much on resale (aside from making it look stolen) [laugh]

With it in park, jiggle the shifter arm and key at the same time.
When in doubt....spray heavily with penatrating oil!

On my truck there is a little lever underneath the key that you push down.

thats my thoughts too, rack it down to first then up to park multiple times, and also might need to turn the wheel a bit.

Tried the jiggling and turning. Couldn't find a single position that had any more movement.
PB generally solves all my stuck problems, but didn't think it would have a chance here.
The next idea on my list involved a ball peen, but figured I'd check for better ideas first.
