Normal boost level with EZ?

I read all these post where guys are getting 30+ lbs boost with just an EZ. I dont get it. I can get to about 26 psi max and thats it. It seems that I was getting a couple of pounds more before I installed the exhaust brake but I'm not sure if that is something to expect. Is the HY going to make that much more boost than the HX? I was thinking about the MAP sensor and if that can cause any trouble if its not working correctly but I dont know how to check if its going bad. I know they arent cheap and I dont have money to buy one and have it be working just fine. Doesnt the EZ plug into the MAP? Does anyone know how to check the MAP sensor? Or maybe explain why I dont see those boost numbers? I have done a boost leak test and everything looked OK. The only leak I could hear was coming from the intake valves but I assume that to be normal since they cant be real easy to get sealed totally closed at the same time. Thanks for any help.

KATOOM:

I have an EZ on my '99, and I can get up to 36psi at WOT. Did you install the boost elbow, or otherwise alter your wastegate so that it can achieve higher boost pressures?
My '99 uses the boost elbow, but I know other years have to use a turnbuckle arrangement.

I have the boost elbow and also checked to make sure it was working. I even disconnected the hose on the wastegate but that didnt even change anything. How can you tell if the wastegate is stuck open? I would think that if it was stuck closed it would be the same as not having one?

Re:Normal boost level with EZ?

I see 28 or 29 if I've got it WOT. I've looked for leaks, and found none. I've got the boost elbow in. I've been wondering the same thing too.

At least I'm not alone here. Like I said earlier, I was getting about that also untill I installed the exhaust brake.

Re:Normal boost level with EZ?

26 to 28 was what I was getting for awhile, so I got an elbow with a smaller release hole and then it went up over 30 psi. Check the hole size on your elbow. You can check your psi by clamping the hose with a vise grip pliers too.

Re:Normal boost level with EZ?

You guys are not helping each other. Boost varies with engine load. The guys who are reporting numbers when they are empty are going to be WAY lower than those guys who are towing.

With just my EZ and elbow, I could only get 26 psi empty.

Now if I would have towed heavy with that, 30psi would come pretty easily.

Now that I have injectors, too, I can hit 30-31 psi empty, even here in the high altitude.

Please state what conditions you are getting your boost numbers under, or else all our conversation is worthless.

Re:Normal boost level with EZ?

Don't know about anybody else but my numbers are empty. If that was during towing i would have said that.

Not true, you should get as much at WOT empty as you do loaded.

Re:Normal boost level with EZ?

Mine was 23-24 lbs until adding injectors, then went to 30-32 lbs. No other changes.

Re:Normal boost level with EZ?

I don't have the experience with the the Cummins to know...But Hohn would be dead on with the Ford I had before. Most boost came from long hard pulls loaded, provided I could keep the RPM's up. I would tend to agree with him on this one too as the motor has to work to develop appreciable boost.

Re:Normal boost level with EZ?

I get mid 20s just getting on the freeway, and 34 passing someone going up a hill (empty). Couldn't hit those without the turbomaster, now I hit higher boosts and it comes in faster.

Not trying to start urinary olympics here, but it IS true.

Ask yourself why you can't get the boost as high in low gear as you can in high gear, all the while at WOT. I can hit 32 psi, but not in 3rd hear or 4th gear... Hmmm.. HOW COME?

It's because the engine isn't loaded as much in the lower gears. Because RPMs rise, it "consumes" some of your boost. So the faster the RPMs can rise, the LOWER the peak boost you will see.

So when does RPM come up the slowest at WOT? How about when towing in top gear, maybe even uphill?

MAx boost will come when the engine is under max load, plain and simple.

Boost is resistance to flow. With no restriction, there can be no boost.

Think about. Then ask me for more details if it still isn't clear.
