The noise is probably the throw-out bearing or clutch plate's springs rattling. If the noise was constant with the truck in motion then it might have been the input bearing in the transmission or one of the differentials wiht a gear whine. Since you say that the noise is only heard in neutral and not under power or in gear then the noise is comming from the clutch plate, fly-wheel, pressure plate, and throw out bearing area (Bell Housing). This is because the transmission should be stationary and not rotating in neutral with the truck stopped, since there is no power being transfered to the Input shaft from the clutch plate.

Another note, the New Process NV5600 (6 speed) transmission tend to have less noise then the Getrag G56 (6 speed). This due to the single pressure plate clutch plate set up on the NV5600 compared to the Getrag G56 dual disc and pressure plate. Although both will rattle with with age and wear if the oppertunity arrives. This is an good indicator on a high mileage truck that you should start shopping for a clutch assembly.

I notice that you did not list what type of transmission or truck you have. It would be a good idea to fill out you signature so that we can correctly give you advice that specificly pertains to your truck. [wink]

I would be willing to bet a donut that it is the FE side of your clutch. My ceramic clutch sounds like the trans is falling out. Does the noise go away when you just bump it off idle?

My guess is it's the release (throw-out) bearing. I don't know how many miles you have on the clutch, but considering your mods, you may as well throw in good performance clutch assembly (that includes the release bearing) as you will have to pull the trans anyway to replace the bearing. That is, if you have the money to do so.

Have you ever change the trans oil? It's a good idea every so often, but the NV-5600 is VERY oil specific. Regular 75W gear oil will destroy the internal bearings quick. The trans uses a very thin (5W-30) syncromesh gear oil and your choices are pretty limited. The Mopar stuff is OK, but very expensive ( the local dodge dealer quoted something like $22.00 a quart!). Pennzoil offers it, and Amsoil offers a full synthetic version for about $9.00 US a quart.

I have the SBC OFE and experience the same noise you describe. It is normal, it is rattle from increased plate load and the heavy-duty throwout bearing.

For 3rd generation trucks: if it's a 5-spd, it's a NV-4500. If it's a 6-spd, it's a NV-5600. If it's a 6-spd and the case is made out of aluminum, it's a G-56 (introduced halfway through the 2005 model year I believe).

Mine is ferrous metal. How good are these trannies? The reason I ask is that I have had to replace two transfer cases.
