I was out with the truck the other day and after pulling into a parking lot where several people were standing, I let it idle 'till the temp came down as usual. After shutting it down and getting out, I heard one guy say, "I was about to go ask him to shut that noisy thing off." He was sitting on a Harley with straight pipes.

Let's get out the DB meter and test which is louder.
Personally, I would prefer to hear a straight piped Harley over a Cummins.

I love pulling into a parking spot by a payphone...when someone is on it. Of course I'm going to have to let it cool down... they look at me about 9 times in the process because I know they can't hear dick. If someone complains to me about engine noise I'll find a way to make it louder. I guess I just woke up this morning and decided to be an [edited by admin]

IMHO, I would prefer to hear that wonderful, mighty Cummins ISB 24-Valve (Stock or Straight piped), over a little straight piped Harley any day! ;D

I only wish my 1st Gen would sound as nice as a 24-valve ISB :'(. Oh, well.

I like Harley's too, but a staight piped Harley can be outright obnoxious with the noise level!

Just my $0.02 cents.

Respectfully,

Nicholas R. Gajewski

I get to hear them both. :)
Truck on some days, Harley on the nice days. Both straight-piped. ;)

I'm noticing a lot of "For Sale" signs in the neighborhood. Two on my street alone. ;D

Well hears a good one for you. I use to have a 1998 dodge 5.2 , I start early in the morning and my wife complanes I wake here up with it, but with the diesel she can't even here it GO FIGER. [laugh] [laugh]

I love the sound of them both. But the one sound that will always be better than a Cummins or Harley, is a high compression, 454 big block with a set of long tubes. That is a sweet sound. What makes it even better is when it has been cammed, and is in a 71 Chevelle. ;D Droooooooooll.

my 93 cdt is a lot louder than my 94 ctd. I was upset over that one. I want my 94 to rattle the windows when I drive up the road.

I've noticed that the HO has a different sound that the non-HO. Must be the compression difference or maybe the injectors.

I recently met a new lady and we have seen each other for about two months now. We were riding in the CTD the other day and she said, "God, I love the sound of that diesel!" I think I'm in love :P

New to diesels, love the sound of mine and others going down the road. Probably only thing better, the sound of a two bladed helicopter flying overhead. After 30 yrs I still always stop and look up!!!
Smokin J

No complaints about the sound of my CTD 24v. The main reason I didn't go for the '03 is that it is quieter. I wanted the 4 doors to. Didn't care for the look but the four independent doors would have been nice.

I've had people ask me why I have a truck like that but never any comments on the noise. OH except in the drive thru. I usually shut it down before they get around to asking but on a few occasions I get " Can you please turn your vehicle off?" I'm tempted to say NO. Now that would be a sight!

Heck thats one of the main reasons I bought the truck was for the noise. The other was for the power ;D

I get a grin every morning when I unplug it and start it up. I have loved the sound of a cummins ever since I was a little kid. Which wasn't that long ago, I am only 19.

I read the thread about CH looking for a red neck girl. My gal fit the description except that she's 47. Another problem is that she only wears Levis. No Ranglers for this cowgirl! ;)

IMHO a couple R5 V-16 Enterprise diesels with a combined rating of 17,000HP takes the cake. Each one is bigger than my truck and weighs in at about 300,000 pounds. How do you type a grunt? hehe [laugh]

I guess I'll toss in my two cents. For BigBlue, I am only 19 ;D And for cattlehauler, my girlfriend love my truck. She liked it most last year when I pick her up from her school for her off-campus lunch days (she is a senior in HS) and all her friends know when I arrive, since I arrive about 5 minutes early for just that reason 8)
As far as complaints....It's always nice seeing people roll up windows and call me number-1 with the wrong finger at traffic lights. They always get the "fare-thee-well" cloud when the light turns green [laugh]

Standing next to the nozzle of an F-16 doing pressure checks when they go to burner. The engine pulses are so strong, it feels like it makes your heart beat in sync with it. I can't remember the formula to convert thrust to H.P but I think it equates to over 50,000 H.P :o

Ah yes!!! When I was stationed at McChord AFB, could hear the F15's engines on test stands when they were doing runups. From a mile plus away. An Air Force fighter jet on military launch (not a casual run down the pavement and just lift off into the wild blue yonder, more like mash the gas and scream for altitude. OOOOOORAH) You knew there was power rumbling away in dawn's early bright. ;D ;D ;D ;D

~Dave

I saw a truck with two Pratt & Whitneys on it here at the local drag strip. That was impressive when he stood on that thing. I can't imagine how those things stay together. He was doing burner pops and blew the windows slam out of one section of the tower.

I owned a home north of McClellend AFB in Sacramento CA Years ago. When those monster Galaxy C5-A's came in to land they would come in low over the house on their final approach. They were so loud you just had to stop talking till they went by.
I was selling my home and I was showing this fella the backyard pool area when one of those big planes flew over. I had my back to that guy leading him thru the gate and when I turned to see if he was clear of the gate I saw him in the street running full bore for his car [laugh]
Funny thing was we rarely saw those C-5's just his lucky day I guess ;D The loudest plane I ever heard go over was President Carter in his old 707 Air Force One. When he left the ground they were wide open and not sparing the turbines a bit. Left a black trail trying to get some fast altitude and away from the danger of a possible ground sniper.

I went out and started my truck. I checked under the hood twice to make sure it was running. What kind of noise are you talking about?

love the noise from the engine as well. Pulled up to a wendy's and the guy asked me to turn it off. Not knowing that i usually do, i responded to him to just give me a couple seconds so i can pull up to the thing. Got me 10% off my order. Go figure that one out!!!

the only thing that i have heard that sounds just as good or if not better is my friends ride, he is running dual alternators, when he cuts them things on it sounds like a turbine jet engine winding up. Love it.

I'm 16. There nothing like pulling up to stoplight and revving it up next to some little rice rocket. Then letting the black smoke roll when the light turns green. ;D ;D

To me, the best sound is those old 10 cylinder Fairbanks-Morse opposed piston beasts rolling over on air as we surfaced.
Actually, the very best sounding diesels were the V-16 Rolls Royces that our Canadian neighbors ran in their Oberon class boats. Smoother than a babys hiney.

Or an F-4D on final approach over my apartment building in Torrejon Spain. That front-seater would throttle back on approach and those twins in that F-4 would shriek. Couldn't hear yourself think.
