No reverse auto trans - clutches?

No reverse in my auto trans - clutches?

So my truck goes forward but it will not back up. I put it in reverse and there is almost nothing there. I have an 04 2500 with about 60k on her, tow quite a bit. After doing a couple searches I think it is my clutches in the tranny. I cannot find a procedure to change em out. Has anybody posted this? Any advice?

just changing the "clutches" and/or steels in the auto trans isnt a task for the weekend mechanic. I know what I'm doing, have the few special tools required and don't have aproblem with the job but it'll take the better part of a full weekend to do it, and that's if you don't mess with anything else. If the clutches and steels are gone then you will need to disassemble the drums completely and check the lip seals on the fluid apply pistons too, since the heat generated to toast the clutches will most likely have negatively affected the lip seals. Of course this is just the basic take on it. Depending on how much crap is in the trans you might need to go a little further than just the front and forward drums. You will need to do a little more searching to find out how to rebuild your transmission. If you don't know how to get that info, maybe you shouldn't tackle it just yet.

Ok, thanks, I found a good 48re rebuild post on here and all I have to say is no way, not gonna do it. I think i'm gonna talk to a couple local shops and either have it rebuilt or a new one put in.

Considering mine is having issues at right around 60K from all the towing and plowing that I do any other recommendations would be helpful.

Ok, lets get you on track here!!!!

If third and fourth work okm then the reverse issue is the rear band!!!
It is either out of adjustment or the servo is cocked in the bore.
Drop the pan and check it, adjust the front band and change filter too.
You will need 13 quarts--more if yoiu have a deep pan.

Definitely upgrade some parts. Billet front and rear servos, billet accumulator, billet band strut and anchor, billet cover TC with lower stall and better efficency, shift kit.

Thats the minimum the way your using it. You probably should consider upgraded clutches, and front to handle the loads.

A lot of the success will depend on the builder and how much they know about the Dodge transmission and how to address the issues. You can throw $3000 of parts into it and have nothing better than a stock rebuild if the builder doesn't set it up correctly.

Get some opinons on builds from the builder you are talking to and call some of the big names to compare.

Your problem could be the rear band servo is broke or jammed, or the OD direct unit has suffered a failure. Either way, it will need a tear down and rebuild to fix the problem.

I can't believe I didn't realize this is covered by my powertrain warranty before I posted, about 6 months to spare. It should be the dealers problem, It has only been about 6 yrs 6 months, and I am under 70k mi. All should be good for another 50-60k I guess.

Ummm...don't think so. Your 5 years expired a while ago. 5 years or 100k, which ever comes first on the engine. For your year I think it was 3 yr 70k on the drive train.

how certain are you of this? I read it in my manual, powetrain 7 yrs or 70k. I 've also read it on here.

If I am covered, guessing I should tell them I changed the fluid at recommended intervals? I think my tires are 285's, wonder if thats gonnna be an issue
