no oil pres after very cold start.
I went to start my 1994 2500 this morning in the Alaskan interior (-43 F). It run for about 10 - 15 sec and never developed an indicated oil pressure. I shut down and put a 300 watt magnetic heater on the oil pan and left it all day. I came home after work ( it warmed up a lot it was only -29 F) and tried again, still no oil pressure. Could the thick oil have broken something, or is the 300 watt heater not enough?

What oil are you running? It could very well be a bad oil pressure sender. The sending unit is the off the cam gallery, which is the last place to get pressurized oil, so it takes time. Granted, we're not to -40 temps yet, but we are in the mid -20C temps, and it still takes about 5 seconds to oil pressure registering. If you're truly concerned, I'd pick up a cheap oil pressure gauge and mount it on the filter head to see if you're getting oil there or not.
