My wife took the truck down to get an inspection sticker on it and was told that if it didnt have a muffler they couldnt put a sticker on it. I live in a small town of 5000 people in the middle of Texas and looks like the mess is starting here. I still have the cat on so what Im thinking is I will probably clean the cat out and put on a good muffler. Will probably go with a Donaldson 40" and just keep it all 4" for now.

Go to another shop, I lived in east Tx and never had a problem with no muff.

I'm at Ft Hood and had the same problem. Just ride around and look for a small shop. Don't give up yet.

Its the same here in NC. I fortunately live out in the sticks where all the shops are ran by good ol'boys.They see diesel on the registration and don't ask any questions.They still like to stick me for the extra $13 dollar for the window tint inspection but I'll take that any day over them crawling around under the truck.

The turbo acts as a muffler on turbo-charged vehicles, that's what I would tell them. If they don't believe, then pull it off and see how loud that cummins is Not worth the hassle, but I'd go that route or tto another shop. Here in Austin(tree-huggin' capital), even the most strict shops say it must have the CC(if factory) and that's it. Good luck!

I feel the same way about austin. Ive lived here all my life and its one of the most liberal towns in the nation.

Try another shop. You might find a diesel fan/owner as your inspector in some places. (I know one in Austin)

Wait, Texas does not do emissions testing so why would they even look under the truck? I've had mine inspected and they basically check all the lights and slap on a sticker. No more than five minutes. If it is noise then how do all these gassers with glasspacks or dual exhaust pass?

Under the safety inspection. Emissions equipment including egr, evap, cat and muffler are required to pass safety (if they came with it from the factory).

I'd just go to another station, but yes, diesels are now 100% required to have a muffler other than a turbo. They changed the wording recently

(travis and williamson counties) use obd II for 96 and up. two speed idle (which actually test the exhaust emissions) on vehicles older than 96 and up to 24 years old. So old gassers/muscle cars only have to pass safety.

The problem lies with the vehicle height. Vehicles are not required to be put on a lift to check. So us lucky truck owners, sort of get the shaft with the ability to see under our vehicles.

go run down to the local autoparts store and buy one of those "fart cans" the ricers use and a clamp... pull into the lot of the garage, slip that thing on your tail pipe and lightly clamp it on (even put it on backwards if you need to so it will fit over your pipe dia)... I don't think the law can address the location of the muffler, just that it needs one.... Who cares if it sticks out 1.5 foot from the side of the truck as long as it is installed...

Have them inspect it, back it back out in the lot and pull it back off after the sticker is on...

Or find a small mom/pop shop that will inspect it, and when you pay your bill slip the guy (owner) an extra $20, tell them "thanks for getting you in so quickly and to buy themselves a burger for lunch... They will remember you if you keep up the same practice and keep coming back to them... DON'T say "thanks for over looking the muffler"...

Remember, inspections are a money looser for every garage so if they don't find something to fix and charge you for then they lost money; so why not drop an extra "tax free" $20 to an "honest" garage to keep them from having to resort to unethical means to survive... besides that it's gonna cost you alot more then $20 to fix your issue... I am not saying to use this practice if you have a true safety issue (ie bad brakes, steering componets, etc.), but something more like an extra crack in the windshield, no muffler, type things that aren't going to cause you or anyone else on the road harm...

It will be a couple of weeks before i get home and i will try another shop. Seems to me the people that make these laws no nothing about what a muffler actually does. My 69 Charger had 3" Flo Pros on it and it was loud as all git out, the truck is no where near as loud. It doesnt matter how loud it is just so it has mufflers on it. Any one know where I can get a 4" electric exhaust dumps to put in front of the muffler?
