No more fuel plate!

Well now that i got the ATS tranny in my truck i dont have to worry about the HP blowing things apart! So i took out the fuel plate as Diesalman24 told me to do and my god does that thing fly now!! i will be putting in gadges to keep an eye on everything for when i tow but for now i think everything will be fine. And if i have any problems im going to cut a hole in the side finder and mount a eltric fan there and build a ram air to help it keep cool. Got to love these trucks and with all the moods ive done its only costed me 30 bucks for the strait pipe in the truck.

Re:No more fuel plate!

First of all, with no plate, you can spike your EGTs so fast it would make your head spin if only you could see it on a gauge!
GET ONE BEFORE YOU MELT YOUR PISTONS!

Next, there's a pin in the rack in the injection pump that will likely shear off from not having a fuel plate. You need to at least run a #0 plate (flat).

Re:No more fuel plate!

yeah but the fuel plates cost mpney and i have no money! as for for the EGT i was romping on it all day yesterday and tap the turbo with my hand and it wasnt that hot at all it was just the same as it used to be. Now i know that isnt a tecnical test but it wasnt that hot so im not to concern right now. And about that pin which one is it? and have you ever seen anyone that it has brocken off on? just wondering. Thanks

Re:No more fuel plate!

If you dont have money for a plate, then you for sure dont want to buy a new 7100 if that pin breaks. Play it safe for now and put that plate back in. Or, change the contour of the plate to make it a "0" plate. It has been done before and I am sure someone on here can give you the dimensions.

Re:No more fuel plate!

what im still wondering is that has anyone seen that pin break or is it just you think will happen? The guy that told me to do it said that he had 40k with out any problems. I just want to clear things up with for certain facts, and if your sure that the pin will break then i will put the plate back in but if you not sure and dont know anyone who it has happened to then why should i worry?

Re:No more fuel plate!

Hey,rockcrawler the plate no plate has been a hashed out subject for sometime,I would listen to these guys that are telling you to put it back in or at least let one of them show you how to modify it to save you some money For the time being, and then save up and do it right,as for now get you at least a pyro and watch your temps,as for not hurting anything concerning the heat,it is not the turbo you have to worry about,it is the pistons you are to worry about, you can melt them when continually going above the recommended temp, think of it as a torch, you can turn a piece of metal red and then if you hold it too long it will melt,I do not know the person you said that told you to take it out, they might have never had any trouble, but as far as gaining knowledge I would recommend asking for more than one response,I know you have been told by at least three people to put it back in and you are at 3 to 1 now it is 4 to 1, I know without a doubt you will find more to agree to put it back in,so take heed when you are given great advice,Goodluck and hope you do not have any trouble till you make your decision, Rick

Re:No more fuel plate!

I use a plate. No plate is bad juju! :-

Life is not as fun when you gotta shell out bucks to replace a pump that just worked yesterday and now it is broken. P pumps went way up in price too.

Re:No more fuel plate!

Here is the thread that started it all. I think the guy that started the thread ended up replacing his pump. http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...p;pagenumber=1

I dont have to worry about the tranny as a stated befor but i dont want it to run really hot sense i plane on towing over mountains with a bit of wieght car trailer (5500) and truck camper (2000). I just got a new injection pump in there and im not going to destroy it.

Re:No more fuel plate!

i can tell you that with an automatic 12valve with intake and exhaust mods with no plate wont make excessively high egts. it's the governor spring kit, especially with bigger injectors that will give the excessively high egts (i had all i could do to hit 1150* with #0 plate, stock injectors, k&n, exhaust at sea level) (the gsk allowed my egt's to go to 1400*). the stock cam is efficient up to 2800rpms, after that there's just more heat created. however, i wouldn't push it without an egt guage.

to make a #0 plate, grind the stock one's profile down so that it's flat. i did it slowly, grinding a little bit and then cooling it down many times until i finished. it has to be 2/3 forward or back roughly in order for the internal pump arm to hit the plate. if the #0 plate is full forward, then the arm will go underneath the plate and go into the "No Plate Zone". the way to get around that to obtain more safe rack travel is to do the lever adjustment as noted on Pier's website.

as far as the pin breaking...i still don't know, i've heard both sides. however, i have had to replace my injection pump and it wasn't fun dropping $1000 that i really didn't have (and that's a cheap price!).

i've noticed that at 7200ft my egt's were 100* higher (1800* yikes) and spiked much more quickly. towing may also allow the egt's to get too high even without a governor spring kit (which i recommend as the best 12valve mod!!)-not sure.

Re:No more fuel plate!

a little late on this thread but my neigbor took out his fuel plate on his 96 and advanced the timing about 8 months ago we drove it to schied diesels show in indiana this year and with no other mods his truck dynoed 327hp and 913tq. How long will it run before it bombs I told him about this but between me and him its always 12valve and 24valve whos trucks better i think he thinks im just messin with him.

Re:No more fuel plate!

all im going to do is go buy the 5 plate and go with that sense they dont say anything about haveing problems with EGT. I dont want to worry at all, i can do without a little HP to be able to consestantly tow up a hill i would be really ****** off if i have to stop.

Re:No more fuel plate!

Hey rockcrawler, you have already accomplished a very important issue, that I have seen quite a few struggle here and on the other web sites about these trucks, you have figured what you want to do with your truck and how you are going to use it,and now are on the path to get it there,I read for months on this and two other web sites to figure out what I wanted, and I wanted to get the truck to a point where I could pull harder and not have to worry about the temps, and not go to far as to not be able to use my truck for what I need. I would recommend contacting piers and talking about the #10 for pulling loads with and the 3k governor springs,Goodluck Rick
