Red face No Bus

Just now got home and had to get on here and see if you guys can help. I was 4 hours from home on a family vacation when, I went to start the truck after dinning out at a diner when I heard chimes and then check engine light come on along with ABS light and Brake light. Then the odometer started flashing, then it stopped showing mileage and displayed "NO BUS". The gages were not working....no fuel, oil pressure, tach, voltage, or water temp. But it was still running and sounded fine. I called a local to home dealer and he said it will not be anything simple like a fuse, but they thought it would be ok to drive home. Just would not know how fast I will be going. It seems they were right. It shifted fine and ran just fine, just no gages. What happened and do you think it is something a decent backyard mechanic could fix? Oh yeah, I need to mention that the ABS and brake light would come back on for a few seconds anyway before this happened, kinda think i have an issue with the steering pump which runs the brake system.

I had a similar situation a while back....gauges went nutz, radio, clock would flash, warning chimes going off.....turned out to be altenator packed it in, not charging at all. I guess the low voltage screwed things up..put a new alt in and the it was back to normal immediately(once the batteries were charged enough to crank it over). Check to see what your alt is putting out.

ok, wanted to update everyone. It is not the alternator. And i Gave the site a week to help come up with answers. I did a search. I tried the download the programmer and go back to stock thing and nothing. Everything seems to be working fine, but no gages. I guess I gotta take it to the dealer.

Had the same problem, no bus, no gages... Plugs to the instrument cluster were loose, need cardboard shim behind instrument cluster to hold plugs tight.

Good Luck

This is a common error for both our trucks and the newer Jeeps.
The error can be caused by a variety of things. However, the most common cause is loose or dirty wiring connections.
The biggest problem is finding out where that/those loose connections are.
Ive read posts where its a dirty connection within a wiring connector.
Ive read posts like above, where the instrument cluster has come loose or needs to be shimmed.
Ive also read where the tilt wheel pulled on a wire within the steering column causing a bad connection.
Also check the ignition switch itself. Ive read where the ignition switch could be wiggled around and make the NO BUSS go away.
If you have some time to spend going through all the above, check it out. Like I said, most of the "No Buss" issues are caused by the above stated areas.

Good Luck
Rich.
