No acceleration

This is the first diesel I ever owned with a auto trannie so I have never experienced this happening before and it happened tonight for the third time in 2 weeks on my '03 3500 5.9 with a 48re .It started fine , I put it in drive mashed the fuel peddle and no acceleration....stopped ,put it in park then it accelerated like it was suppose to.Any ideas what might cause this?
