View Full Version : The Next Arizona Meet and BBQ

It's about time we do another meet and greet, don't you guys think?
The weather is just about perfect this time of year!
I'm going to throw out a couple of options that I'd like some feedback on from you guys.
First, would be location. The three places I thought of would be:
A Diesel/Truck oriented Shop. For example, the last one was held at Truck Werks. This is great because you get to meet and hang out with a local vendor who runs a business that entails working on your truck, in addition to meeting and hanging out with fellow enthusiasts. Also, Jason with Truck Werks was gracious enough to open his shop up to us, and allow us to work on our trucks if we wanted. Really Cool!
A Dyno shop. We could check with a local Dyno shop and get permission to hold the meet and greet at their facility. In exchange, we would probably have to run our trucks on their dyno for a fee. (Ohh, Darn!) This may seem to have limited interest at first, appealing only to those who have modified their trucks, but when you consider throwing your truck on the Dyno prior to modification to get a baseline of performance, it becomes appealing to everyone who is or will be modifying for "Performance" reasons.
Any outdoor place, like a City Park, A Lake, even someplace with a little more isolation, so we don't have to worry as much about bothering others when someone decides to do a burnout, or just blow some smoke. If this option is appealing, there are a few places in particular I have in mind.
Next would be When?
I'm thinking Soon, like, let's pick a Saturday or Sunday in March. If we have trouble deciding, on a date, or a venue, it might get pushed back to April.
Last, would be the details of the BBQ.
This time, I think we should try a "Pot Luck" style BBQ. Everyone bring something to throw on the grille, a side dish, and your choice of beverage.

Sounds good to me I am open to any of the 3 places and March is open for me except the 9th.

Hey, I don't know a soul that subscribes to this forum. My truck is preety much stock and I'm not the biggest enthusiast but I would like to get out and meet a few of you local fellas. I'll keep my eye on this forum. If nothing else at all, I can barbeque (slow style) while you all detread tires and burn precious diesel fuel..

You would be welcome!
And about the only way you are going to meet anyone on this forum is to go to one of these Meet and Greets.

Posted this on Cummins Forum also. So far, looking pretty good to have it at a Dyno shop. Also, for purposes of planning, I think we are going to be leaning toward March 29th.
Anyone else wanna play?

I spoke with Keith at Arizona Dyno Chip today. I told him what our "Basic" plan was. I told him we were tentatively thinking of doing this on March 29th. I told him we would be bringing our own stuff to BBQ, and a pot luck side dish (Chips, salsa, potato salad, Beans, Whatever...) and our own drinks.
He said the rates for 2wd are $45 4wd is $65, but that is only if you run on all 4 rollers. If you have a 4wd, but run it in 2wd, he'll give you the 2wd price.
I thought it was cool you could run on the Dyno in 4wd.
He said right now, March 29th is open, and he has us "penciled" in. If another club definitely wants the date before he hears back from me, he'll have to give it to them.
He also said we need to run at least 10 trucks on the Dyno for him to reserve the day for us. I told him I would get with you guys and get input on all those interested. He said he didn't have a problem with more people showing up to watch, socialize, BBQ, etc.
Right now, I need to find out who all is interested in running on the Dyno, and who is interested in just coming down, and hanging out.
Please post up if interested!
Once I have 10 people interested, I'll firm things up with him and reserve the date with a definite. More than 10 people can run, I just need 10 to get the ball rolling.
This is going to be Great! [guitar]
Arizona Dyno Chip is located at 513 N 54th street Suite #5, in Chandler (Basicly, I-10 and Chandler Blvd. Saturday hours are 9AM-6PM.
More info, a map etc. can be found on his web page:

I'm down for any location / food arangment. Just that the Mopars At The Strip car show is that weekend, so I would not be able to attend. Any other weekend is good. I would love to get a good baseline on my truck before I start doing mods to it as well. If the dates are changed, definately count me in. I had a real blast at Truck Werks.[guitar][guitar]

Ok, Talked to Keith, we are all set for March 29th.
Their hours for that day are:
Saturday: 9:00am - 6:00pm
2wd Dyno rates are $45 for the first 20 minutes.
4wd Dyno rates are $65 for the first 20 minutes.
He accepts Visa, MasterCard, Cash, everything EXCEPT American Expess and Discover Card.
I did not ask about Personal Checks, so let's limit it to the above 3.
He doesn't include the dyno setup time to your truck in that 20 minutes. The clock starts when everything is ready to go.
You are welcome to make as many pulls as you can in that 20 minutes. You are given a printout of the horsepower and torque graphs, as well as a numerical printout of horsepower at each RPM increment. The graph also shows the Air Fuel mixture for each RPM. You may also choose to have the dyno runs emailed to any address. Then you can go home and play with the dyno runs with the free Dynojet Runviewer software.
He doesn't care if you want to run your car on the dyno instead of a truck. He doesn't care if you want to run a Chevy, Ford etc. instead of a Dodge. It's our club day, so we can allow who we want to run.
Maximum number of vehicles is about 30 in a day, so be sure to get a commitment from your buddies that want to run, and post up here so we can keep track. (Preferrably Dodges, but a few Chevys and Fords or whatever wont hurt.)
Also, be sure to tell your buddies about the BBQ, so they can bring something if they want to eat
I think that about covers it. I'll be posting a little later about the BBQ and a shop sponsor, so stay tuned!

Someone mentioned having a shop represent themselves at this event.
I have invited Truck Werks to attend. This is the shop that hosted the last BBQ Meet and Greet. They are a good group of guys, and were wanting to get more involved with local events.
Jason should be getting back to me with the details of his involvement soon. Here is a link to their web page for those of you not familiar with them.
http://www.truck-werks.com/base%20page.html
Ok, time to lay out some stuff for the BBQ.
Everyone should be bringing something to grille, and something to drink.
Those of you up for it, we could also use some side dishes, like Beans, Potato Salad, Chili, Macaroni Salad, Chips, Salsa, Guacamole, Cole Slaw, pretty much anything you would want to eat at a Picnic or BBQ.
We might want to post up what side dishes we are bringing, to help give us and others who are undecided an idea of what is being brought, and what they can contribute.
Can't cook, or just don't want to? [laugh]
Here's a few other things we will need:
Paper Plates, Napkins, Plastic utensils, plastic cups, a couple tables to put the food on, Lawn chairs, anything else you can think of!
I'll be bringing my BBQ Grille, there evidently is also one at Az Dyno Chip. I'll also bring my propane stove to help with heating the hot food. I plan on bringing some Ribs to throw on the Grille, Some Fritos Scoops and some Queso dip.

Well maybe I can talk the ol' lady into making her famous 3-layer dip :D But if that doesnt happen, I can dish up some beans or something as a side dish.
On another note, anyone hear of the dyno day that might be happening in Sholow in the next few weeks? I just talked to a friend of mine to see if he wanted to go, and we know a guy who owns a shop in Flagstaff who is rounding people up to go there. I'll find out more info on it, and let everyone know. Regardless, I'm still committed to dyno with all of ya, maybe I'll go there just to BS.

Yes, after everyone on the list has had the opportunity to run, they are more than welcome to.
The list is for planning purposes. At first, it was to establish "Who" the minimum 10 required vehicles were. Now, It gives an Idea how busy the Dyno is going to be. Also, I planned on using it as somewhat of a "Running order".
If we get close to 30 people, it's going to be pretty much just the people on the list.

Put me down for bringing some goodies - probably a couple of boxes of them good cookies they make at the bakery, you know with the M&M's in em and stuff - LOL

Well, even though I had to leave early, that was a good time :D I do however think that the torque numbers on the early first few rounds (including mine) where quite a bit off [verymad] I think it was a combo of being an unloaded dyno and probably some mistakes getting the RPM sensor synchronized with the truck. But besides that, it was fun and was nice to meet some of you guys.
There will be a dyno in Sholow on April 19th. I'll get some more information on it and let you all know. Jason, order some injectors and get those turbos spooling! Has anyone been able to read their dyno runs, the website in the email wont load for me.

I think it was a combo of being an unloaded dyno
On the last dyno day, I put down 388/822 with my smarty on 9 with the 4.4 beta, so I'm not convinced with mustang dynos either.

Well I think dynoing with an auto without being able to truly load the engine with a Hardwired Lockup switch from 1100rpm was most peoples problems. I ran on that same dyno a month prior and pulled 48Xhp and 1118tq so I beleive the dyno was very accurate for my mods

I know, post hog...but i think the shocker of the day was the fully stock 6.7 laying over 300hp and high 500's in torque - all with a squeaky clean tailpipe. Durring one of his runs I put my hand in the exhaust stream for a secong and then smelled it....didn't smell like anything and absoloutley no soot - lol

The website has a program download for some software that will read the files sent to us from Keith. I downloaded the zip file, unzipped and ran the setup but was still unable to read the files from Keith. I called him about it and he said his computer was stripping the files before attaching them to the emails. [verymad] He was still running folks on the dyno so I let him get back to work and he could fix it later. I hope he doesn't forget. I had some pretty nice numbers and I would like to have the proof with the dyno sheets.
Who was that old man with the stock looking silver quadcab that put down 463 hp and 951 torque? Oh, yeah, that was me! [roll]
There were some folks that were asking me about my mods. Being old and forgetful, [duhhh] you will have to refer to my signature. It is pretty much in order as to when I put them on the truck. I also had one of the first Bully Dog Power Pups, but sold it when I got the Smarty (also one of the first). [coffee] I have had the truck almost 4 years and you cannot expect me to remember everything.

Yeah Ken, I think your right about lockup switches on the auto trucks. But I still dont see how that Mega cab with the stacks (sorry, forgot your name!) put down 950 ft/lbs, while I only put down 783 with pretty much the same mods, minus the tranny. He wasnt running a lockup controller, but that still wouldnt prevent low RPM kickdown. Im pretty sure they tried to brake the dyno when he started his run, and that may have helped him build lower RPM boost and pull the torque numbers. Now I really wish I bought a 6-spd [duhhh]
I know with 06 and newer dodges a Star Scan you can lock in a gear, like the GM tech scanner with the chevys. Thats nice for a dyno, just lock it in 3rd and drop to almost idle and punch it. Anyone know of any way to hold 3rd lockup without getting a kickdown to 2nd gear? I know a lockup controller or a mystery switch will hold lockup, but wont they still kick down a gear?

Im the guy with the stacked mega cab, I have to go look at the files and see which one was the best, but I think it was the one that I did a straight 2000 rpm pull. It was kinda funny when he braked the dyno it went a little crazy when I got on it lol! Thanks Jason for putting on the show...I laugh every time someone blows a boot, I dunno why its so funny to me but it scares the **** outta everyone lol!
Oh and if you have anymore pictures of my truck could you possibly pm me so you could email them to me? Thanks!

I sent an email to Keith saying I could pick my files up with a usb drive if he doesn't get the email thing fixed. If it is not feasible for others to pick theirs up in the same fashion I could get their files and post them on a web server so they can pick them up. It might work.

HiddenValleyHVAC on the Cummins Forum said that the guys at Dyno chip had found some problems and said we can come back next weekend and dyno for free. I think my horse numbers are right but torque is off... The red mega is runnin pretty much the same stuff and had almost identical horsepower curves so I am gonna go off his 950 torque [laugh]

Reading the files aren't as easy as clicking and opening them, you have to download the software and install it, then open that program and import your dyno run files. You then have to choose what parameters to use on the graph like power and torque over rpm.
It's kinda complicated, but you can set up your graphs the way you want them....really nice if you ask me

Tranny setup makes a HUGE difference. The mods done by a DTT builder, using a DTT Torque Converter ... cane EASILY make a 10% difference. Also remember he's on 35's or 36's which will also change the numbers quite a bit.
Auto's are VERY hard to dyno, but a built DTT makes it MUCH easier! The numbers make more sense because the tranny holds the gear, and the TQ is MUCH more efficient in and out of lockup. But in lockup it's MUCH more efficient than a stock converter.
Proof in the value of a tranny was watching the 6sp's ... compare their numbers with equal mods to the auto's and the HP numbers were 10 - 15 % better almost every time.
So ... now who is gonna get harassed for a video of everyone's run!? Didn't see anyone volunteer this time! :P

The "Death Defying Dyno Dog" belongs to me. Her name is TJ, and for a girl, she's pretty ballsy!
I put down 417HP and 800 Ft/lbs with my truck on level 9 SMARTY.
I just floored it when he told me go, I didn't know any of the "Fancy" Dyno driving tricks. I was still pretty happy with those numbers.

This was posted on TDR after I asked how some were running on the dyno with automatics. I posted a question about if running lockup controllers/mystery switches also helped control downshifts to get a lower rpm launch for a 3rd lockup pull... Even some of the trucks that put down higher numbers may still have even been off due to this...
"I am assuming this was a Dyno jet apparatus. If it was a mustang then you have another problem.
Your short on the TQ because you were running in drive and not OD. You need to load the motor as much as possible in OD to get the full TQ readings across the rpm range. Even a with a brake most of the DynoJets can't load the motor enough to get full readings.
Forget the 1500 rpm runs, unless you run a TNT R tune or Crazy Larry, these engines derate starting at 1800 rpms and at 1500 they are 50% or more derated. The auto trucks are made to run and pull above 1800 rpm's so use that as a baseline.
Yes, the lockup switch will make a big difference in your runs. It allows you to lock it into OD with no downshifts and get a good map. I run the truck up until it is locked in OD then start applying brake and throttle to get some boost into the motor, remeber these things severally derate fueling under 12 psi. Once I have about 15 psi built I give the operater the nod to start the data collection and floor it.
Smarty #7 with moderate TQ management it runs ~ 450 HP 900 TQ with rpm's running from 1800 to 3200. "

wildcat,
I do not see anything in you signature that looks like a high performance fuel pump. Could it be you are running out of fuel pressure? I have a FASS that pumps 150 gpm. I also heard that 5" exhaust doesn't help a engine with stock turbo, may hurt a bit.

Yeah, a Walbro pump is next on "The List".
I don't think the 5" exhaust is hurting me. And if it is, it wont be for long, when I get to the Turbo side of the equation.
It's all just a matter of time.

His numbers should be just a hair less than yours Ron, its just how we drove these autos on the dyno. Yours being a 6-speed, you were able to make a low rpm pull and build boost lower in the rpm range so you could build the low end torque, where as we could only hit it from a 2000RPM roll, without any load on the motor. Or in wildcat's case, just floored it, and without a loaded dyno, automatics will not produce the torque. I watched my rail and fuel pressure on my 07 during my runs, and didnt drop below 6psi. For rail pressure, I saw a slight drop in pressure once I reached about 2500 rpm, but it came back up. I dont think just the smarty alone would suck a rail dry or be too much for the stock in-tank pump. But, I do plan on a pump after my trans, to handle some big injectors [guitar]

Ahhh! Injectors! I am already flirting with 500/1000. Do you think that could put me over? That is SRT-10 territory in hp.
kwilkinson
04-04-2008, 12:51 AM
SRT-10 territory?! I just raced one the other weekend with the smarty on 5 and smoked him! [guitar] I will admit he was burnin the tires for the first 3 gears, but getting all that power to the ground is half the battle!
Injectors should easily put you over 500/1000. Even just stacking with that smarty (TS MP-8, TST PM, etc.) would put there. But after that, I'd be thinking of a turbo, it never ends [dummy] Werent you the one saying you were hitting almost 1800 EGT on the dyno? :o

Werent you the one saying you were hitting almost 1800 EGT on the dyno? :o
I was hoping no one bring that up. Yeah, I said that. [duhhh]
About the time I bought my truck (2004) there was a guy on TDR who did a write up on different gauges. He actually compared different brands of EGT gauges and hooked them up to a scope to measure their sampling rate. This was one of the criteria he used to determine accuracy. Sampling rates (how often the gauge reads the signal from the sensor) tended to be higher in the units that appeared to be more accurate. I bought the SPA gauge because of three factors. 1, it was electronic and had many features, and 2, it was a dual gauge, and 3, it was determined to be the most accurate, which, as it turns out, not to be all that important.[redface]
I have rationalized the 1800 degree reading was due to the fact that the higher sampling rate had a better chance of reading the peaks of gas temperature that other gauge might miss and the sensor is pre-turbo. It is hard to demonstrate that without have two trucks set up similarly in a long hard pull or another truck with a SPA EGT gauge. I cannot even find a long hard pull without running into traffic or running out of incline. All I get is spikes going up Yarnell Hill or the Sunset Point. But it is fun trying, especially when a Ford or a Chevy think they want to race you, or block your pass. [laugh]

Put a turbo on it, and it should put you over 500, plus brings the EGT's down a bit.

Hey Arizona Guys, My name is Mark Rau and i am going to throw this out there for anyone thats interested. I am trying to put a Diesel Get together/Race on May 23rd (Friday night) at SpeedWorld Dragstrip in northwest valley. Races start at 7pm till midnight or so. I have tried in the past to get diesel get togethers going and have had a few good ones but am going to try again to see if we can start to get something going more often. I know me and a few buddies will be there racing and I believe Fred Swanson will be coming with us and i am sure most everyone knows him. Please try to make it if you can and bring all your buddies! Last race there Dodges got showed up by Fords and we can't let that happen!! Please contact me if you have any questions i will be keeping a list and trying to get numbers of everyone that plans to go. Hope to see you there!

Talked to Speedworld and they already have an event going on, on the 23rd so we are switching it to the 24th. Saturday night, they know we are coming and we will have our own Diesel Lane and section like we had at Diesels in the Desert Race. All Brand trucks are welcome not just Dodges. I know the AZ powerstroke group is coming out there as i have talked with Shawn and he said he will bring about 20 trucks just from his group. Lets make it happen and get a big turn out!
