Newest member of the lift pump club, warranty???

My truck died last night while I was on a 2-lane blacktop doing about 50mph. I coasted to a stop off the side of the road, knowing exactly what was up (thanks to this site). It would start and run for a second but then died before I could even put it in gear. Couldn't hear the whirl of the lift pump when I turned the key. I cracked open the drain on the fuel filter and it went "fzzzt" like a soda can, no fuel ran out. I called a buddy and he towed me home. At least he drives a Dodge too, so I didn't have to put up with the embarrassment of being towed by another make , it was dark anyway.

So....what's the verdict on the lift pump being covered under the 7/100 warranty? I've heard it both ways on this site- sounds like it depends on the dealer. I'm probably selling in the next year or so as my kids have outgrown the quadcab, so I'm not really interested in upgrading to a FASS, Glacier, etc. My warranty book says the "injector pump and injectors" are covered under 7/100, but nothing about the lift pump.

If the dealer won't cover it then Genos sells a replacement for the canister mount type pump, assuming that's what you have, and it's less that $200. Pretty easy to replace too.....

Called the dealer, said they'd replace it with the in-tank version for the $100 deductible.

Now I just got to get it there.

Once the pump is in the tank it should go a long time says the dealer. But no going back.

Hold on a sec, couple things i learned about that $100. deductiable When my lift pump crapped out..

our trucks 03 04 had 7 yr 100k from date of in service ( bought)
starts warranty anything under the 5 yr mark there is NO deduct nada zilch. aft 5 yr to 7 yr is a $100. deduct

Mine was two weeks inside the 5 yr so no deduct, this is clearly spelled out in the warranty handbook in the glove box....

I don't believe there is a way to go back to a LP mounted to the factory engine mounted fuel filter. Not that you would want to. But I could be wrong. The only possible plus would be that it is possible to change out the LP that is fuel filter mounted in the field. If the tank mounted one dies it could be much more difficult to get going again. Not sure another LP will pull through the dead tank LP.

You will be happy with the in-tank. Its a much better unit.

I heard Dodge did away with the $100 deductible.. either way its still a cheap upgrade/fix.

Good info, thanks. I bought my '03 in Oct. of 2003 though, just over six years ago.

If and when mine dies, if I can get to the dealer and it's free I would go for the in tank pump. Then I'll just sell the spare. Just wondering, what does the dealer do if the tank is full of fuel?

Followup report- excellent dealership experience

(I posted some of this elsewhere, but this one has extra pertinent info.)

Finally decided to go with the in-tank version and called the dealership. I asked for the service manager and gave him my name (since I'd been in once before for ball-joints under warranty). He entered it in the computer and said "no problem, your lift pump is covered under the 100,000 engine warranty with a $100 deductible, we can fit you in anytime- and we have the parts in-stock".

Because of a death in the family and other obligations I couldn't get the truck to them anytime soon (50 miles away or so). I knew they had a used car lot 10 miles away. I sheepishly asked if I delivered it there, if they would pick it up on a car-hauler/flatbed. "Sure!" was the reply. I dropped it off last Friday morning and they called me later in the afternoon to tell me it was done and being dropped off at the used car lot for me. Unbelievable! I assumed it would take several days for them to go pick it up (beggars can't be choosers) and I'd have to get to the dealership myself to drive it home.

I'm a believer that a good dealer makes all the difference (and I didn't even buy my truck from them).

Just a note on indications of lift pump failure:

In hindsight, 3 days and about 70 miles before it croaked I noticed a brief but distinct loss of power while under moderate to hard acceleration. I had to keep pushing the skinny pedal down to get the results I expected. Also, immediately afterward I parked the truck and smelled diesel coming from the left-front side of the truck. I dismissed it as someone who must've parked in that spot before me.

Now that the truck is back, I'm amazed at the extra power on tap, and wonder if it had been failing for a while and I just hadn't noticed the lack of power. Either that, or had grown too used to driving my parent's Duramax while my truck was down.

That's good news for you. Glad they hooked you up. For me, I still have a full warranty for another 35000 miles or couple of years but just in case I get stranded somewhere I keep a spare LP with me at all times. I also put a FP gauge in the truck and keep an eye on it all the time...

FP gauge is a most excellent idea. I had one on my truck when my LP dumped around 22,000 miles. I noticed the drop in fuel pressure even though the truck would still run. It kicked a code out also, straight to the dealership it went. My intank crapped out though, just my luck. Airdog fixed me up then.
