Newer truck or build 01?

I have been going back and forth on keeping my 01 quad (non HO motor) that will be paid off later this year, or trade up. The room of a newer (thinking 04-06) quad cab is appealing. Also out of the box almost 100 more HP and over 100 ft lbs of torque. Looking for thought on this... What would it take to get my 01 running these higher numbers?

I had an 02... went up to an 06.... and now I'm back to a 94. I should've just kept the 02 and saved my money. The 06 was nice... but I'd have a lot more money right now if I had just kept the 02

Man the newer trucks are really nice looking and nice inside also, but the older 24 valve cummins just have so much more grunt from the pipe they just sound so much better in my opinion. A new truck would be nice to have but the new truck payment eh not so much.....

Are you planning on throwing performance parts at a new truck if you were to get one? What kind of shape is your current truck in? The Common Rails are nice, and can make great power. But then again if you plan on keeping it fairly stock it's a hard decision! The interiors in the new trucks are nicer IMO, but then again I've always enjoyed the 2nd gen's...

If you can live with the steering and the ride, put a chip on it.

My brother had an 03 HO 6 speed 4 door SB with an Edge EZ. great running truck. He now has an 08 6.7 4 door LB dually that is stock. It is a complete turd.

My dad had a 99 5 speed QC/LB with a Diablo Power Puck with RV275s. He now has an 04.5 4 door LB dually with a Diablo Power Puck (the 3 setting one. stock,60,90 iirc), he runs on 60.

The ride on the new trucks is unreal....... The old man loves that truck, still misses the old one (more snap to it and pulled harder). The brother really misses the old one (hands down more snap, more power).

With my truck.....they both love it, dont have to shake the gears, pulls like its on steroids.

I have a good runing truck with an ok tranny, get stupid and the tranny WILL go away. With a better TQ/VB it would really run good (be able to use all the power).
Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Agree getting rid of payments soon would be nice. New truck would not have any performance parts, would have to setup for my cabover camper and get a class V hitch so I can tow jeep behind it. My truck is in great shape. Actually looked a few newer ones I would not drive because they were in worse shape then mine. Need to look around this board more and see what it would take to pull more pony's out of mine current truck.

i looked at 3rd gens but imo i like the look of the second gens better. plus its like getting a extra paycheck at the end of the month not making a payment. I have been looking into some 75 hp injectors and maybe a smarty. but i need to upgrade my trans first. you can find injectors from 300 to 1000. and a smarty is about 600 you will need gauge's if you dont have them already. trans upgrade pretty much 2 to 3 grand. depending on how crazy you want to get. so 4 grand sounds alot better than 5 years of payments to me.

Agree with all. Im a big fan of 3rd gens cause the look and ride. But ill have my 2nd gen for ever, even if its just parked and weekend driver one day.

Take the money that youd be makin a new higher payment with and make your 2nd gen how YOU want it.
You have the fuel system.. Few more gauges, Smarty, some RV 275's. Thats all easy cheap stuff and youll be so stoked on your truck.
Then put a little into the trans and get a Hybrid turbo and fuel box Smarty stack and youll be at 400 hp and lovin life for 20% of the cost of a new truck.

Thats about where im at now. But the bug is still bitin me hard hahaha

I have said it before, but I will say it again:
I went from an '02 to an '05 and then ended up going back to an '01. The 3rd gen trucks ride nicer, but the one I had ended up being a nightmare for me. More cracked injectors than I care to mention (under stock conditions) and the truck ended up spending more time in the shop than on the road. The problem with that is that I need the truck to earn a living. I have found that with enough money you can mike your truck ride as nice or nicer than a 3rd gen. The biggest drawback would be if you need more space.
If your truck has been properly maintained, I say keep it and dump the equivalent of your would be monthly payment into it for a year or so, it will put a big grin on your face!

My exact question also....I have one more mod to have things just about the way I want on my 2nd gen BUT hate the back seat and lack of room! No one under the age of 5 could ride back there comfortably. The 2nd gen is almost paid for. I may have the option of buying my bros 3rd gen but fear of having to start all over again w/the mods. AHHHH, whats one to do.

Do what I did...I sold my wife's car and bought "her" my cousins '03 CTD. Now I have both my '01 and "her" '03 at my disposale and then when...or I should say if she gets tired of the '03, I'll sell my goat and keep hers!!! Its a win win.

Went through this last year and decided to keep the truck. I put a new tranny $4K, new head $1.8K, and will have to put a new turbo $1.5K and new VP $1.5K sometime in the future. Even bleeding cash I still have an amazing cost per mile.... I'm at about 21 cents per mile including cost of truck, all maintenance and all repairs. Try that with a new $50K truck and you have to drive a long time to bring the long term cost down. Stinks to buy the big ticket items, but my truck is built like I like it. Just wish it had a bigger back seat....

Thanks for all the feed back guys! I have thought about it and am holding on to the truck. When it comes to space I never have to sit in the back I really look forward to starting to do some mods on it.
