Newbie...

I am new here and am fairly excited at all of the new information I now have at my fingertips.

I have a million questions. I have a 96 CTD which I bought used a few years ago. The odometer is reading 173K. I have had the automatic tranny rebuilt to hold 400 H.P. and to work with my pacbrake. The truck has flat out pulled away from newer CTD rams. So I am kinda thinking that the previous owner has done some mods already. I just wish I knew what was done. Anyway to find out what was done? One hint is there is a thermocouple in the outlet of the turbo from the previous owner. It does not smoke, does not burn oil, starts like a champ, and makes my whole family happy.

How can I get the 400 h.p. I want? This is our families "family truckster" so it must be civilized.

How can I tell what injectors and DV's I have? What turbo and has it been modified?
I have already put in an AFE intake and 4" exhaust sans muffler. All of the fluids are synthetic.

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Sir!

I too have a 1996 ram like yours, This is a previous newbie tutorial that i have come across to better explain just how to get a little more power out of your ram. Please take the time to read it and i apoligize if it is redundant

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ad.php?t=78573

Well the first and foremost thing, Does your new truck have gauges? If so then it must have some sort of engine modification, If not then chances are that it does, I see you have already bombed transmission, and AFE, What your truck probably has if it has gauges is a Governers spring kit (mentioned in newbie tutorial), and a fuel plate. If anything that would be the bare minimum.

You do want 400 horsepower with minimal smoke? this is what i would do
370 injectors
number 10 plate
time injector pump to 16-17 dgrees
191 delivery valves
AFE
Exhaust

Your stock turbo will probably hold enough to get to 400 Horses, if you would upgrade your turbo, you might be knockin at 500 RWHP's door.

Your truck, being a 1996 automatic, has the 180 pump, Delivery valves are 180's i believe, and asfar as injectors go, i dont believe i can help you there. I apoligize... Hey im still learning as I go, but im willing to bet money that you have stock injectors. It dont take too much to wake up an automatic trans ram to the point that yours seems to be at.

best of luck with ur new truck and i hope that all helps!

Rick
