Question newbie ?'s

Hello. I'm a new dodge cummins diesel owner with a few questions. I recently bought a 2001 2500 4x4 with 31,000 miles. It has the auto tranny. I believe it's the 47re, but I'm not sure. How do I find out which tranny I have. Also what does the 47re stand for and what is the difference between it and the 48re? Will it hurt the tranny to tow in overdrive on the highway? I already checked my engine block and I saw 55 where everyone said to ckeck. Is this good or bad? I also saw alot of people say that they have a 2001.5 model truck. My truck was made in april of 01. What makes the 2001.5 different from the 2001, and how do I tell which one I have? Thanks for reading.

Hi and welcome.

You have the 47RE, the 48RE wasn't available till halfway through the 2003 model year.
Not sure on all of it, but I know the 4 means 4 forward gears(3+OD), and the E is Electronic (used to be H for Hydraulic)

Most of the time you can tow in OD no problem, if it starts shifting back and forth between 3rd and OD,
lock it out to keep it from hunting.

55 is the good block, 53 is the bad one.

Rear disc brakes came out halfway through the 2001 model year, so those with rear discs refer to theirs as a 2001.5.

Allllright! Elvis! My 'ol lady still morns yer passing...TCB dude, search "fuel pressure gauge".
How come we had to pay $8.00 per to ride the tour bus across the street to tour yer digs on top of the regular tour price? Anyway, nice scooter dude.

4 = 4 forward speeds
7 = relative torque capacity
R = rear drive
E = electronically controlled

That's how they now classify their transmissions. Another example, from a FWD car 31TH

3 = 3 forward speeds
1 = relative torque capacity
T = transverse engine
H = hydraulically controlled

Thank you, thank you very much for all of the replies. Torquefan said that the 7 in 47re is the relative torque capacity. What is the relative torque capacity of the 47re, and how does it differ from the 8 in 48re, besides being one less? Also how much torque and horsepower can the 47re handle? Feel free to post dyno numbers.

The obvious answer would be 700 f/p torque for the 47RE and 800 f/p torque for the 48RE.

My stock 2002 puts 190-200HP and 400-420 f/p torque to the ground,
and based on comments here, the stock tranny can't handle more than 100 or so horses, which would be about 200 torque, which would put it right in that neighborhood.

From what I understand, the relative torque capacity numbers were assigned by Dodge to compare the strength from transmission to transmission. The numbers don't relate to anything else, such as torque values.

GM has a similiar system, their transmissions have names such as 4L60E and 4L80E. (L being "longitudinal")
