newbie questions
Hello All,
I found a 96 2500 reg. cab 4x4 with 255K miles on a dealer lot today. The truck looks very clean. are there any particular things I should be looking for as trouble spots. the truck has no rust, carfax is clean. the only thing it needs is new tires. they are asking 6k. any help is appreciated. the only dodge i ever owned was a 350 ram van which is still running today.

Make sure it does not have a FRAM oil filter on it
If it is auto check the fluid for burnt smell. If it is manual check for gear whine in 5th and see how well the clutch holds. See if the dealer can run the VIN for the heater switch recall as well as the vacuum pump check valve recall. Check the trackbar and ball joints for looseness (cause of death wobble). The killer dowel pin is the hardest thing to check for as it is under the timing cover. Look to see if the injection pump has had the breakoff screw replaced as this would signal that somebody has been in the pump to change the fuel plate or AFC housing.
Lots of little things that can add up to either be big problems or non-problems but the motor, if not abused, has probably another 200+K miles before it will be ready for a rebuild. The body will fail before the motor does. And the best part is it ain't got too many valves in the head

covered it, Just look at it like it is a regular used vehicle. Also if you buy it, make sure and kill that KDP, regardless of auto or manual trans, 6k seems ok, 250K for a cummins? nothing really....

I drove the truck today. it rides nice, the engine sounds good, the trans shifts properly, i took the vin to a dodge dealer and they said all of the factory recalls had been performed. it does have a fram filter on it. the only problem i found is the fuel gauge didn't work. we put 4 gals of diesel in to be safe and the needle did not move.i offered $4500 for the truck and will be taking posession in a few days.
