Newbie Auto Tranny Question
So heres the scoop, this is the first diesel i've owned and first vehicle i've ever really had to do anything besides rotate the tires and change the oil on. The truck has about 95K miles on it, and seems to be slipping in first and second gear. But it's only when I really hit the gas. If i slowly increase the gas it shifts great. Also in the higher RPM's it makes a squealing noise. i know it's not the turbo, or belt...so what the hell is it? From what i've heard I should start with changing the fluids/filter and adjusting my band clamps. Is this something that any tranny mechanic can do or do i need to take it to a Dodge dealer? I know it's a few questions all combined into one, but any help would be great. PS i think this cummins motor is sweet, too bad they couldn't put a descent transmission behind it.

Welcome to DTR,
Fill out your signiture (under User CP) so we know what year, trans, etc truck you have.
The squealing noise is tough, noises are almost impossible to dianose without hearing them.
It is a good idea to change the fluids/filters, adjust the bands in the transmission. Any tranny shop should be able to handle it.
The "slipping" your feeling is the lousy stock torque converter absorbing power, turning it into heat, and not transfering it to the rear wheels at higher throttle levels. Once it gets into 3rd gear the torque converter locks up and there is no converter slippage at that point.
BTW, the auto trans is alot tougher than most people give it credit for.

The tranny has some funny things about it, but don't cut it short! I have a stock tranny with 120K on it, I have about 100hp extra, due to upgrades, starting with a Banks Power pac, at about 20K. I just this month upgraded the valve body, and have had no issues! I tow and haul. There are not too many trannies that can do that!
