New tires, mileage problems

I just got a great deal on four new Toyo mud terrains, 265-75R16, for $50 each. I had them mounted yesterday and went on a 200 mile roadtrip, no towing. I only got 16.5 MPG, as opposed to 18.5 to 19 with the stock Michelins of the same size. I had no idea there would be a mileage decrease with the tire change. Now I am looking to dump the Toyo's and get some more Michelins Or maybe Pirelli's. What do you 2wd guys use on your rigs?

I don't think the tires would make a 2-3 mpg differance, but why mud tires on a 2wd??

Check the pressure, first. My Buckshot mudders have a max pressure of 50 psi; the tire shop left them at ~35 and my mileage fell 1.5 mpg. I aired them up to 45 and got most of that back.

Mud tires has more rolling resistence, creating more load, using more energy to maintain speed.

Why mud terrains? The price was way right and I've been stuck a few times. Besides, I already have a Jeep and the Boss would'nt let me have 2 4X4's

Tire pressure is always your first check for mad MPG. Always.

Then, keep in mind that those Toyo M/Ts are big, heavy, gnarly tires. They weigh probably more than any other 265/75r16 tire you can find!

Also, these Toyos are E rated, so they can handle the higher tire pressure like your stock tires. Run them up to 55F/50R and watch the MPG come back-- at least in part.

The aggressive tread does have some mpg penalty, but it shouldn't be THAT much-- certainly not when you kept the same size!

Also keep in mind that a larger tire is going to throw off your speedo and therefore your odometer. There are a few options for fixing this. You can go to the dealer and have them change it , get a hold of a superchips programer and change it yourself, and if you're a cheap SOB like me, you can have someone drive next to you at a designated speed and see how much it will be off at different speeds. I figured my speedo is off by 10%, so I account for that when figuring out mpg.

2 mpg is alot. My guess is air pressure. Also could be winter fuel... I'd make sure of the pressure and run a couple of tanks before I bought new tires!! They will probably not give as good mileage as the Michelins but I sure don't think it'd be 2 mpg!

I switched from the original OEM Michellins to the SUV all terrain Michlies because I could stand the capacity reduction and the original traction SUXED. I could lock em up on dry road and slide like on sand. The ride got a little softer too. The big drawback on them was they needed replacing w/less the 45K miles.
Now I got a set of Goodyear Silent armor Wranglers. First thing I noticed is less rear end chirping going around lowspeed corners and less squeal on offramps. Mileage is about the same (19 city- 24/26 hwy). I'm all about traction so since I don't load my truck down much I'll live with these happily.
I did throw 2 ton of crush and run in the back to do a walkway at home. The thing squated and wobbled but I only had to go about 10 miles so no biggie.
