new tires and wheels

alright, so in a little less than one year my present tires (superswamper trxus MT's 285/75/r16) with only about 13000 miles on them are bald. my opinion of these tires is extremely low but since that doesnt have anything to do with my question ill stop there.... :

anywho, im in the market for new tires and new wheels as a package deal from someplace like 4wheelpartswholesalers. my question to yall is, how tall of a tire can i fit on my truck? i really need to be sure because if they end up rubbing, i wont have the money right away to go out and get a leveling kit. my 285's fit fine so i was thinking about 305's. i know alot of u run these and am wondering what your experiences are?

any help would be appreciated
thanks
jeff

Re:new tires and wheels

jeff--I just replaced my stock Michelins with a set of Bridgestone "REVO"s 285's I was concerned also about 305's.
So far--love the looks--very aggressive looking tread, but quiet as a church mouse. Don't know about warehouse deals, but I got a buy three one free deal from Tires Plus--ended up paying a smidge over $500.00 out the door. Luck to ya

Re:new tires and wheels

jeff,
I have ordered several sets of tires from 4 Wheel Parts they are an excelent source for wheels and tires. They have specials all the time, were shipping is free. And mounting and balancing is free. I have had very good wear from BFG M/T, I have used them on several trucks and they should be good for over 40,000 miles, just keep them at the right pressure and rotate. Sorry to here about the low performance of the Trxus, I have a set of thoes also, but have not run them (summer tires), hopefully I can do better. Another good source for tire/wheel package deals is NTW or National Tire And Wheel, or Desert Rat. I have bought plenty from both, and they are both very good to deal with.
If you were to go with the BFG's, I would think the 305-70-16 would be a great fit.

Re:new tires and wheels

Jeff,
I also installed Bridgestone Dualer A/T Revo's and they have been great. There is no road noise and great rain traction. My stock Michelins only lasted 13,000 miles. I have 14,000 miles on the Revo's and they still have lots of tread. I installed 285/75/r16's and they have been great. The 285 only comes in a D rating or 8 ply. My next set will be the 265/75/R16's not because of anything about my present tires, it's for a 1 inch shorter tire for drag racing. Yes the tires currently on my truck have had "MANY" 20 psi boost launches and they still have lots of tread. Well there's my .02c's. ;D

Re:new tires and wheels

does anyone know if theres any way to measure to see if 305's will rub?

i know some of u run them but i also know that if u have either a snowplow prep package (or somethin like that) your front end sits a bit higher.

thanks
jeff

Re:new tires and wheels

I am running 305-70-16 Mastercraft Courser CTs http://www.mastercrafttires.com/us/en/images/tires/large/courserCT.jpg on factory 16x8 rims. They rub the left lower control arm slightly at full turn to the left. I have had them like this for 25K and have not had any problems. If you were to run them on aftermarket 16x8 rims I think you would be ok, most aftermarket rims move the wheel outward slightly.

Re:new tires and wheels

305's will rub slightly mounted on factory rims when the wheel is turned to full lock. Nothing to worry about too much. Like Ryan said, they'll rub the lower arm slightly. If any rubbing at all is something that would bother you, you'll have to go with aftermarket wheels with a little less backspaceing.

Re:new tires and wheels

I've got aftermarket 16x8's on my truck - is there a way to know if they'll work with 305's better than the stock wheels? I'm pretty much tire/wheel illiterate. Thanks.

Re:new tires and wheels

I'm running 305's on 16-10" rims..look like big donuts..they rub at full lock on the rear of the inner fender when turning into a driveway, but thats it..I have stock suspension..The look is beefy..they will stick out about 2-3 inches..I have OEM flares that just barely cover them. Great for the sand if you're in to that type of thing.

Re:new tires and wheels

I'm not sure what the stock backspaceing is, but you can measure it by laying a rim face down on the ground, set a ruler on the mounting flange, and set a straight edge across the rim. The distance from the mounting flange to the straight edge is the backspaceing. Must not have a tire on the rim to measure. (unless you make a straight edge that is narrower than the tire, but longer than the rim, where it catches the edge of the rim, but not any tire. You're going to want less backspaceing in the aftermarket rim. Maybe 1/2 or 1 inch, I'm not sure. Talk to the tire and wheel guy about it, if he's good he should know. As for rim width, alot of people run 305's on the stock 8 inch rim, but you'd be better off and probably get more tire life with a 10 inch rim. The standard that i hear alot is the tire should be within 4 inches of the rim. i.e, if you're running a 12.5 inch wide tire, like a 305, you should be running at least a 8.5 inch rim.

Re:new tires and wheels

I'm running 37" Swampers on an 8" rim. Granted I have 4.5" of lift, but I get about 30-35K from a set of swampers before I get down to the wear bars.

If you're looking for an AT type tire, I ran a set of ProComp AT's before Swamper came out with their 10 plies. I put about 25K on them and sold them to a freind, they still had more than 50% of the tread left. I believe they come (or used to, at least) with a 50K mile tread wear warranty. 305's should fit with an aftermarket wheel without rubbing....
