New Thread Same Old Question Turbo For Towing
I have speant countless hours reading on the issue and know it has been debated over and over through out the years. I know Twins always come up but these places are way to proud of their work. So here is my version of the question. I want a single turbo that spool well enough to tow up to about 15k and keep EGT's managable with my TST. It might get 50 hp tips while having the injectors rebuilt . And while asking for my cake and getting to eat it to I don't want to spend over $1k on it. Got any ideas?

UHHH.... Look in the classifieds, most under a grand will probably need sent in to get checked and probably rebuilt. Size wise you will probably want to look for a super b, 62-65-14with stock stix, or 62-71-13or 14 if you get 50hp stix. Good Luck

What about an HX35 off a 2nd gen or a HX40? I also found off the self S300 and S400 for about 1k or less in few places? Doe the S variants need performance tweeking?

^^^ I agree. Forget the HX's. That he351 is probably your best low cost bet. Off the shelf s300 is not guaranteed to just bolt in but is a good turbo. With the correct wheel sizes matched to your application, it shouldn't need "performance tweaking".

I was only thinking the HX due to the larger housing from this Tinny 9 on the truck now. I get some crazy drive pressure with the TST on 5X5. Would changing the exhaust housing on my current help any? I thought the HE351 only differnce was the compressor wheel diameter. Not doubting the claims it is better just not sure how if the exhaust housing hasn't changed?

Just changing the EH would not help you a lick. The he351 shares the same small EH, but puts out a condsiderable amount more air which is what you need to cool down all the fuel you want to throw at it. Yes, back pressure is a concern at high end WOT... but you wanted to spend less then $1k too. So you see, you cannot have cake and eat it too unless you buy a used turbo whether a HE351 or s300 variant. You cannot keep your existing turbo in any shape or form and expect anything from it from the power you are asking.
