Slapped the ole pressure gauge on the truck and here is what I found. The pressure at idle was hovering between 10.5 and 11.5 psi., cruise at 6 to 8 and I could pull it down to 2 psi at W.O.T. Not good. The current fuel filter had about 7000 on it, so I went ahead, changed it, and re-tested. I gained about 1 psi across the board. Ok, new lift pump. Talked with a service tech I know and he said that they had to flow test any pump that was replaced. He also said they went over trucks with a fine tooth comb and especially checked for pierced pump wires ect,ect. According to him, Dodge makes them jump through hoops to replace pumps. No problem, ran down to the local NAPA and they stock the pumps. The guy at the counter told me they had sold three pumps already in just a short time.
160.00 bucks later and I am out the door. A friend of mine installed the pump for me in his garage. (truck wont fit in mine). On goes the gauge and I find that I have gained a whopping 1 to 2 psi. Idle 13, cruise 7, W.O.T 4.5 to 5. I even went as far as asking him if he did indeed change the pump and wasnt flim flamming me since there wasn't that much difference. He gave me the old one to keep as a spare. What are the odds of getting a new pump that puts out almost the same pressure as the one just replaced? It looks like a set of new banjos are in order. Any other things that should be checked guys?

These pumps have been known to be bad right out of the box. I just installed number four on my truck and have got it down to about 35 minutes, even pulling the filter housing. I bought two from Cummins, $148 a piece, put one on and the other in the cab for a spare.
Had to install the old spare coming home from Arkansas.

If nothing else, I would definately get the banjos. I mean hey, 35 bucks for 4 hi-flow & 1 tapped hi-flow (not to mention they are a cinch to install), how could you go wrong? It wont do anything but help! In the process get you a fuel pressure guage!

The first chance I get, I am going to chunck that 1/8" line form the ff to vp, and put on at least a 1/2' line.

edit: By the way, I jsut installed my fp gauge, and im getting 15 psi at idle, 11 at cruise(70mph), and 7 @ wot.

Your numbers are identical to mine. I had my pump replaced under warranty and the pressure didn't come up that much either. I have banjos ordered from Rod at Wildcat. We'll see.

From the for what its worth file..

If you go with the 8an fuel line replacement kit from Rod, you'll see 17 idle, 15 cruise @ 70, and 10-11 WOT on level 9..I just put a new LP in from Cummins, and thats what I'm getting for pressure..

Those lines make a really BIG difference..

Banjo's are the cute "little" devices that are used to attach the fuel line to places such as inlet and outlet of lift pump, inlet and outlet of fuel filter and inlet of VP44. They are restrictive because they make the fuel turn sharp angles to get into system. Some stock lines have also been reported to be less than 3/8" I.D.

I eliminated the problem altogether be removing the stock fuel line and banjos all the way back to the tank and replacing it with -6AN socketless line and fittings. In the process, I also relocated the stock LP to the frame back near the tank. My fuel pressures have never gone below 10 WOT since. Used to go all the way down to 6 before. BTW - Knock wood, still using the original LP, almost 32K.

Sounds like something else I need to do. My LP is still origional with 122K on it. It was checked by WTTD on the day after Thanksgiving when he installed my Edge Ez and guages, and it was still good. I also bought a FP gauge that I will hook up at fuel filter changes to keep an eye on it.

Question: Do you have your fp gauge hooked on the inlet or exit of your fuel filter?

Mine fuel pressure is measured post filter, actually just before it goes into the VP44. I want to know if that bad boy is getting enough fuel!!!!! ;D

If you go to the 1/2 inch line:

What brand / type line do you use?
Does the new line go between Fuel Filter and VP44?
Did I see banjos that go an both sides of the LP?
Do you order banjos according to line size?

I looked on Geno's at banjos, but wasn't sure about the lines or sizes.

Sorry if this sounds pretty basic, but it's one of those Cummins things I just don't know.

Mine truck has 60,000 miles on it and still has the original lift pump. These are my pressures, 12 @ idle, 9 @ cruise and 6 @ WOT. Are these normal? Would the larger banjo fittings be of benefit?
